As of today, many studies have demonstrated the possibilities that geolocated data from social networks have for the study of urban phenomena. This chapter offers a retrospective and panoramic view of a selection of social networks that have been used to understand a wide range of urban dynamics. Findings from this review and previous experiences evidence that the social networks often selected and used for the purpose of assessing city dynamics share key characteristics such as (i) the locative properties; (ii) the data privacy and availability; (iii) the data potentiality to inform about specific phenomena related to the urban environment; and, (iv) the fact that they are mobile device-based platforms and, thus, users are considered as sensors, and their traces as crowd-sourced sensory information. Five exemplary social networks that meet these four conditions are dealt with in detail (Google Places, Foursquare, Twitter, Instagram and Airbnb), highlighting the opportunities and challenges they portray with respect to data collection and quality for the purpose of urban studies.

This study revisits the debate surrounding the definition of neighborhood boundaries by addressing the disconnect between the city’s Administrative Neighborhoods and its functional organization. A method is proposed for dividing the city into more meaningful units through the spatial distribution of urban activities by retrieving data from Google Places. The dataset was pre-processed and spatially divided into Functional Clusters. A comparison between functional and administrative subdivisions of the city was undertaken, from which three overall conclusions could be drawn. First, a function-based city partition allows economically active urban areas to become the neighborhood’s center, thereby creating a polynuclear neighborhood structure that would potentially encourage greater cross-movement of people throughout the city. Second, the specialization of activities becomes more evident in Functional Clusters than in Administrative Neighborhoods. Third, access to up-to-date data makes possible a timely diagnosis of the quantity and diversity of urban activities—i.e., economic activities, services, and facilities—through Google Places data. The value of this contribution is to inform urban decision-making and policies in order to better balance the provision of a neighborhood’s economic activity.

The design of efficient Green Infrastructure —GI— systems is a key issue to achieve sustainable development city planning goals in the twenty-first century. This study’s main contribution is the identification of potential GI elements to better align the environmental, social and economic perspectives in the GI design by including information about the use, activities, preferences and presence of people. To achieve this, user generated content from Location Based Social Network —LBSN— Foursquare is used as a complementary data source. This involved the construction of an interdisciplinary correlation framework, between the Landscape Ecology principles and the GI elements, that included the classification of Foursquare data into grouping types. The classification considered the potential role of Foursquare venues in the GI network. Valencia City in Spain served as an illustrative case study to test the validity of the proposed method. The results suggest that Foursquare can provide a valuable insight on user perceptions of potential GI elements. Moreover, the findings indicate that user generated content from LBSNs like Foursquare can serve as a complementary tool for analysing the dynamics of urban outdoor spaces to assess GI network, thereby facilitating more effective urban planning and contributing to the social sustainability of the city.

This study addresses the problem of facilitating critical thinking about the real-world complexities that underlie the Sustainable Development (SD) concept among university students of architecture. The Socratic Seminar was adopted because of its characteristic exploratory questions that are closely aligned to the question-types used by the lecturer in previous years during student-requested one-to-one tutorial sessions aimed at clarifying SD concepts. The findings of this study indicate that the interactive learning session fostered a collaborative community of critical thinkers as well as a mind-shift in students’ preconceived idea of SD, suggesting that transformative learning had occurred. Furthermore, the Socratic Seminar facilitated observation of whether students in a group setting could critically apply previously acquired theoretical knowledge to assessing SD in the context provided by the multimedia material viewed. The Socratic Seminar was shown to be a useful educational tool for specifically eliciting the complexities of SD among architecture and urban planning students, thereby building on the pedagogy applied in one-to-one student-driven initiatives.

An insight on urban tourism-related phenomena is provided in this study by analysing open and volunteered user generated content. A reference framework method is proposed and applied to an illustrative case study to meet a twofold objective: to identify Tourist Activity Centre – TAC – areas based on their functional character – sightseeing, shopping, eating and nightlife; and, to obtain an up-to-date fine-grain characterization of the most dynamic zones in an urban context. Instasights Heatmaps and data from Location Based Social Networks – Foursquare, Google Places, Twitter and Airbnb – were used to depict tourist urban activity. This reproducible method transcends Instasights generic visualization of popular areas by exploiting the benefits of overlapping LBSN data sources. This method facilitates a granular analysis of tourism-related places of interest and makes headway in bridging the gap between traditional approaches and user preferences, revealed through digital footprints, for urban analysis. The results indicate the potential of this method as a complementary tool for urban planning decision-making.

The use of location based social networks—LBSNs—for diagnosing phenomena in contemporary cities is evolving at a fast pace. However, methodological frameworks for informing urban regeneration at a fine-grain neighborhood scale through LBSNs is still by and large an unchartered territory, which this research seeks to address. This research bridges the knowledge gap by proposing a method to identify urban opportunity spaces for urban regeneration that involves pre-processing, analyzing and interpreting single and overlapped LBSN data. A two-fold perspective—people-based and place-based—is adopted. Data from four LBSNs—Foursquare, Twitter, Google Places and Airbnb—represent the people-based approach as it offers an insight into individual preferences, use and activities. The place-based approach is provided by an illustrative case study. Local unexpected nuances were gathered by the interlinking of data from different LBSNs, and opportunity places for urban regeneration have been recognized, as well as potential itineraries to boost urban liveliness and connectivity at both intra and inter- neighborhood scales. Findings show that overlapping data from various LBSNs enriches the analysis that would previously have relied on a single source.

Breakthrough changes in the rental market have occurred with the introduction of peer-to-peer accommodation services such as Airbnb. This phenomenon is attracting tourists who contribute to the sustainability of local trade and the economic development of the city. This research enriches the current debate on the range of factors that influence Airbnb accommodation prices. To that end, a method was developed to understand the relationship between Airbnb accommodation attributes and listing prices; and to consider variables related to the properties’ location and surrounding urban environment, considering the touristic characteristics of the four Spanish Mediterranean Arc cities selected as case study. A multivariable analysis technique is used for estimating a hedonic price model that adopts the ordinary least squares and the quantile regression methods. The findings obtained for the impact of location on listing prices are contrary to previous studies. In fact, accommodation prices increase incrementally by 1.3% per kilometer from the tourist area, which in all four cases are situated in the historic area of the city. However, at the same time, accommodation prices decrease incrementally as distance from the coastline increases. Lastly, results related to how the listings’ accommodation, host, and advertising characteristics impact Airbnb prices concur with previous studies.

Analysing the city through data retrieved from Location Based Social Networks (LBSNs) has received considerable attention as a promising method for applied research. However, the use of these data is not without its challenges and has given rise to a stream of polemical arguments over the validity of this source of information. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities as well as some of the limitations and biases associated with the collection and use of LBSN data from Foursquare, Twitter, Google Places, Instagram and Airbnb in the context of urban phenomena research. The most recent research that uses LBSN data to understand city dynamics is presented. A method is proposed for LBSN data retrieval, selection, classification and analysis. In addition, key thematic research lines are identified given the data variables offered by these LBSNs. A comprehensive and descriptive framework for the study of urban phenomena through LBSN data is the main contribution of this study.

Understanding the role of urban public spaces in today’s historic Spanish Mediterranean cities is a key priority for researchers and urban professionals. Increasingly, social media showcases users’ preferences, a trend that can provide an indication as to why some urban public spaces are preferred over others. This research focuses on preferred urban public spaces in historic cities in the province of Alicante (Spain) and has two objectives: to identify their urban morphological features; and, to recognise similar traits in terms of their location within the urban structure. The method involved: first, analysing Foursquare social media data on user preferences about urban public spaces; second, studying spatial and functional urban attributes; and third, recognising their role within the city structure. The results demonstrate that the preferred urban spaces share morphological attributes; a central position in the urban structure; mixed-use ground floor activities; and the presence of relevant urban public facilities.

Locative social media networks as open sources of data allow researchers and professionals to acknowledge which city places are preferred, used and livable. Following this hypothesis, this paper proposes a methodology to identify successful public spaces – plazas – through the location-based social media network Foursquare and to analyze their urban position using morphological and historical cartographies. The overall methodology comprises three stages. First, the most important cities of the province of Alicante were selected. Second, the most relevant plaza of each city was identified using data retrieved from the social network Foursquare. Finally, the location of each plaza is analyzed in relation to the historic center and the main axes of the city. Possible correlations between their urban location and their vibrant character were subsequently identified. Two findings have emerged from this study: (a) a strong spatial relationship exists between the most successful plazas and the historic city center, which reinforces their traditional social character; and (b) all plazas share two similar traits, their location within the urban network and their proximity to the main axes of the city. This work was supported by the University of Alicante.

This paper analyzes success public spaces (specifically plazas) in the urban fabric of the city of Murcia, Spain. Two approaches were adopted. Firstly, the city was visualized as a complex network whose nodes represent plazas. A centrality algorithm was applied to determine the importance of each node. Secondly, data sets were used from social networks Foursquare and Twitter, which provide different types of data as well as user profiles. Foursquare data indicates user preferences of urban public spaces, while in this respect Twitter offers less specific user generated data. Both perspectives have facilitated two rankings based on the most visited plazas in the city. The results enabled a comparative study to determine the potential differences or similarities between both approaches.

In this paper we study the success of public spaces (exactly, plazas) existing in the urban fabric of the city of Murcia, Spain, from two points of view. On the one hand, we apply an algorithm to classify the nodes of a graph in order of importance, from the data obtained through a fieldwork developed on the city itself. On the other hand, we use the data that gives us the social network Foursquare in this city to extract the preferences of its users, related to the different plazas present in the public space in the city. These two perspectives or views allows us to establish two rankings of plazas places in the city, which is the subject of comparative study to determine potential differences or similarities in the results.
