Dr. Sounni is Maître de Recherches (Associate Professor) of the National Fund for Scientific Research (NFSR- FNRS), Belgium, in the University of Liege, Belgium. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (University of Liege) in 2004 on the role of MMPs in breast cancer progression and tumor angiogenesis. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship 2005-2007 in Cancer Biology at the University of California, San Francisco, in the Coussens Lab, where he was investigating the role of TGFbeta signaling on vessel permeability and its application for drug delivery in solid tumors. In 2008, he joined the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, La Jolla, CA, where he investigated the role of cell surface proteases in cancer cell migration. In 2005, Dr. Sounni received the international Henny C. Dirven prize from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. In 2016, he was awarded the triennial Cornélis-Lebègue prize (2013-2015) of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine on his research on the metabolic reprogramming of tumors in response to anti-VEGF therapy. He joined the University of Liège in 2009 as senior scientist and in 2014 he initiated his research team "Cancer Metabolism and Tumor Microenvironment group" at the GIGA institute of the University of Liège, Belgium. His lab focuses on understanding tumor resistance to targeted therapies and the effects of the tumor microenvironment on fatty acid metabolism in cancer cells.
