Luca Ruiu is a scientist engaged in research, development,
and technology transfer in the field of the biological control of insect pests of
agricultural, forestry, and medical–veterinary importance. He is currently a professor
of general and applied entomology at the University of Sassari (Sardinia,
Italy). He was the founder and managing director of a test facility and spin-off
company of the University of Sassari, located at the Technology Park of
Sardinia (Italy). He graduated in agricultural sciences and was awarded a PhD
in entomology at the University of Perugia (Italy). He was a visiting scientist
at the University of Cambridge (UK) and at the University of Santa Clara
(California, USA) as a Fulbright fellow. He is the author of several scientific
publications and some patents in the field of entomology with a specific focus
on the interactions between microorganisms and insects. Many of his studies
have been dedicated to the discovery of entomopathogenic bacteria. He is
the convenor of the SG Bacteria of the Microbial and Nematode Control of Invertebrate
Pests (IOBC) Working Group and the chair-elect of the Bacterial Division of the
Society for Invertebrate Pathology (SIP).
