Breast mass is one of the most distinctive signs for diagnosis of breast cancer, and the accurate segmentation of masses is critical for improving the accuracy of breast cancer detection and reducing mortality rate. It is time-consuming for a physician to review the film. Besides, traditional medical segmentation techniques often require prior knowledge or manual extraction of features, which often lead to a subjective diagnosis. Therefore, developing an automatic image segmentation method is important for clinical application. In this paper, a fully automatic method based on deep learning for breast mass segmentation is proposed, which combines densely connected U-Net with Attention Gates (AGs). It contains an encoder and a decoder. The encoder is a densely connected convolutional network and the decoder is the decoder of U-Net integrated with AGs. The proposed method is tested on the public and authoritative database------Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM) database. F1-score, Mean Intersection over Union, sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that Dense U-Net integrated AGs achieves better segmentation results than U-Net, attention U-Net, DenseNet, and state-of-the-art methods.

Goal. Breast cancer is becoming one of the most common cancers among women. Early detection can help increase the survival rates. Feature extraction directly affects diagnosis result. In this work, a novel feature extraction method based on Dual Contourlet Transform (Dual-CT) is presented, and improved K nearest neighbor (KNN) is employed to improve the classification performance. Method. This presented method includes three main sections: firstly, the Region of Interest (ROI) is cropped manually according to gold standard from Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) database; secondly, the ROIs are decomposed into different resolution levels using Dual-CT, contourlet, and wavelet; a set of texture features are extracted. Then improved KNN and traditional KNN are implemented for classification. Experiments are performed on 324 ROIs which include 206 normal cases and 118 abnormal cases; the abnormal cases are composed of 66 benign cases and 52 malignant cases. Results. Experimental results prove the validity and superiority of Dual-CT-based feature and improved KNN. In particular, 94.14% and 95.76% classification accuracy is achieved based on Dual-CT domain. Moreover, the proposed method is comparable with state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy. Contribution. Dual-CT-based feature is used for analyzing mammogram and can help improve breast cancer diagnosis accuracy.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, and early detection can reduce mortality. Architectural distortion (AD) is a feature of clinical manifestations for breast cancer, however, due to its complex structure and low detection accuracy, which cause a high mortality of breast cancer. In order to improve the accuracy of AD detection and reduce the mortality of breast cancer, this paper proposes a new method by combining the non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) with the improved pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). Firstly, the top–bottom hat transformation and the exponential transformation are employed to enhance the image. Secondly, the NSCT is employed to expand the overall contrast of the mammograms and filter out the noise. Finally, the improved PCNN by the maximum inter-class variance threshold selection method is employed to complete the AD detection. This proposed approach is tested on the public and authoritative database—Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM). The specificity of the method is 98.73%, the accuracy is 93.16%, and the F1-score is 79.80%, and the area under curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is 0.93, these results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is comparable with those methods in recent literatures. This proposed method is simple, furthermore it can achieve high accuracy and help doctors to perform computer-aided detection of AD effectively.

Industrial defect detection methods based on deep learning can reduce the cost of traditional manual quality inspection, improve the accuracy and efficiency of detection, and are widely used in industrial fields. Traditional computer defect detection methods focus on manual features and require a large amount of defect data, which has some limitations. This paper proposes a texture surface defect detection method based on convolutional neural network and wavelet analysis: TSDNet. The approach combines wavelet analysis with patch extraction, which can detect and locate many defects in a complex texture background; a patch extraction method based on random windows is proposed, which can quickly and effectively extract defective patches; and a judgment strategy based on a sliding window is proposed to improve the robustness of CNN. Our method can achieve excellent detection accuracy on DAGM 2007, a micro-surface defect database and KolektorSDD dataset, and can find the defect location accurately. The results show that in the complex texture background, the method can obtain high defect detection accuracy with only a small amount of training data and can accurately locate the defect position.
