To investigate and compare the effectiveness of Nintendo Wii games and home exercises on balance functions in patients with osteoporosis, an important disease adversely affecting balance functions. The patients included in the study were randomized into two groups the Wii exercise group (n = 30) and the home exercise group (n = 30). Wii exercise group performed balance exercises with a Nintendo Wii device and balance board three times a week for 12 weeks under the supervision of a physiotherapist in the hospital, and home exercise group was prescribed home exercises three days a week for 12 weeks. Balance functions were evaluated with the timed up-and-go-test and Berg Balance Scale, and the fall risk was evaluated with the Falls Efficacy Scale at the beginning and end of 12 weeks of treatment. Comparison of pre- and post-treatment timed up-and-go-test, Berg Balance Scale, and Falls Efficacy Scale results in both groups revealed statistically significant improvements (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Furthermore, post-treatment test scores between the two groups demonstrated a significant enhancement in Wii exercise group regarding the Berg Balance Scale score (Mean ± SD 52.9 ± 3.63) (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Within the osteoporotic population, balance functions serve as robust predictors of fall risk. Improvement in balance functions is crucial for the prevention of falls and subsequent osteoporotic fractures. In our study, we found that balance exercises performed with Wii games are effective in improving balance functions in patients with osteoporosis.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of peloidotherapy applied in chronic low back pain on pain and central sensitization and its reflections on patients’ sleep quality, fatigue levels, functional capacity, and disability status. In this prospective, randomized, single-blind study, 74 patients were assigned to the Electrotherapy Group (EG: hot pack+TENS+exercise) or Peloidotherapy Group (PG: peloidotherapy+TENS+exercise) for 15 sessions. Treatments were administered 5 days per week for 3 weeks. Clinical assessments were performed pre/post-treatment using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI), Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale (QBPDS), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy–Fatigue (FACIT-F), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and EQ-5D-3 L. Both groups showed significant within-group improvements in most outcomes (all p < 0.001), except for the EQ-5D index in the EG. According to the ANCOVA results adjusted for baseline values and pain duration, the PG demonstrated significantly superior post-treatment outcomes compared to the EG in VAS ( p = 0.006), EQ-5D index ( p = 0.004), and PSQI ( p = 0.044) scores. Furthermore, the adjusted delta score analysis confirmed that the improvements in the PG were significantly greater than those in the EG for VAS ( p = 0.026), EQ-5D ( p = 0.004), and PSQI ( p = 0.044). In contrast, no significant between-group differences were observed for CSI, QBPDS, FACIT, or EQ-5D VAS scores ( p > 0.05). Both treatments improved pain and central sensitization-related measures, likely due to shared thermal effects. While peloidotherapy showed superior improvements in pain intensity, sleep quality, and health status, no specific superior effect on CSI scores was demonstrated compared to electrotherapy.

Aim: The present study aims to investigate the relationship between chronic widespread musculoskeletal system pain (CWP) and neuropathic pain (NP) among patients, who were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Material and Methods: For this cross-sectional study, the study was carried out in sleep polyclinic of Uşak University’s Medical Faculty Hospital between 1 May 2017 and 1 February 2018. The patients, who applied to the sleep polyclinic for the complaint of sleep disorder and were diagnosed with OSAS by using polysomnography (PSG) but haven’t had a treatment for this purpose yet, were involved.. Results: Examining the PSG results of participants, mild OSAS was detected in 16 cases, moderate OSAS in 15 cases, and severe OSAS in 26 cases. Pain was detected in minimum 1 region in 89% of the cases, whereas 38.5% of participants were found to have neuropathic pain (NP). NP was found to linearly increase with an increase in degree of OSAS (p=0.049). According to Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, 54% (n=31) of the participants had poor sleep quality, and according to Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) scale scores, 36% (n=21) of the participants had low quality of life (QoL). When examining the differences between groups, due to the variables not being normally distributed, the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis-H Tests were utilized. to investigate the relationships among variables that do not follow a normal distribution, Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient was employed. Conclusion: CWP and NP were found to accompany each other among those with OSAS. The prevalence of NP increases with an increase in degree of OSAS. The QoL and quality of sleep among those with OSAS with pain were poorer than those having no pain. Women with OSAS were found to have higher pain and lower QoL when compared to men.
