Energy management is important for both consumers and utility providers. Utility providers are concerned with identifying and reducing energy wastage and thefts. Consumers are interested in reducing their energy consumption and bills. In Pakistan, residential and industrial estates account for nearly 31,000 MW of the maximum total demand, while the transmission and distribution capacity has stalled at about 22,000 MW. This 9000 MW gap in demand and supply, as reported in 2022, has led to frequent load shedding. Although the country now has an excess generation capacity of about 45,000 MW, the aging transmission and distribution network cannot deliver the requisite power at all times. Hence, electricity-related problems are likely to continue for the next few years in the country and the same is true for other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Several energy monitoring systems (EnMS) have been proposed, but they face limitations in terms of cost, ease of application, lack of universal installation capability, customization, and data security. The research below focused on the development of an economical, secure, and customizable real-time EnMS. The proposed EnMS comprises low-cost hardware for gathering energy data with universal compatibility, a secured communication module for real-time data transmission, and a dashboard application for visualization of real-time energy consumption in a user-preferred manner, making the information easily accessible and actionable. The experimental results and analysis revealed that approximately 40% cost savings in EnMS development could be achieved compared to other commercially available EnMSs. The performance of the EnMS hardware was evaluated and validated through rigorous on-site experiments. The front-end of the EnMS was assessed through surveys and was found to be interactive and user-friendly for the target clients. The developed EnMS architecture was found to be an economical end-product and an appropriate approach for small and medium clients such as residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial consumers, all on one platform.

Many electrical appliances have progressed from sheer prototypes to viable products by being automated with the help of sensors and Internet of Things (IoT). In this data driven century, there aren't many data-centric solutions for the effective use of residential and commercial ceiling fans. For the said reason, sensors were installed on a remote-controlled BLDC ceiling fan, and a large amount of user data with environmental indicators such as temperature and humidity, was collected. This data along with the fan speed was logged to a cloud server over Wi-Fi using a Wi-Fi enabled microcontroller. The raw data consists of timestamp, temperature, humidity, and fan speed. The data is logged depending on the change of any parameter rather than a specific interval. The logged data is then visualized on the cloud server to monitor the usage patterns of the appliance and its subsequent energy consumption. The dataset is comprised of the fan data from the bedroom, living room, and lounge obtained by the resident's consent. This data is useful for data scientists, environmentalists, fan manufacturers, architects, social scientists, and several other field enthusiasts. The data can be analyzed based on monthly average temperature and humidity energy consumed, operational time per day or month and monthly/weekly summary of usage. Furthermore, by applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms on such data, it is feasible to extract patterns that indicate the appliance usage and identify changes in the daily routine. Many machine learning techniques can be applied on the dataset to introduce intelligent control of the appliance for adaptable operation without compromising on the comfort level of the user.

This paper proposes a new fuzzy logic-based rotor flux model reference adaptive system (FLC-MRAS) for rotor speed estimation in induction motor drives, replacing the constant-gain PI controller used in conventional MRAS schemes. The proposed observer simultaneously incorporates both rotor flux and electromagnetic torque errors to enhance estimation accuracy and robustness against load torque disturbances. A nonlinear Mamdani-type fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with two inputs and one output, employing triangular membership functions and seven fuzzy sets, is adopted. The effectiveness and useful operational performance of the proposed approach is examined through extensive simulation cases under various vehicle speed driving profiles and load torque conditions using an indirect vector-controlled induction motor drive. In order to investigate the effective operational performance of a speed estimator, different cases are prepared according to the vehicle requirements. To examine the robustness of the proposed observer under realistic operating conditions, rotor resistance variation is incorporated into the simulation framework. This approach allows assessment of MRAS performance under practical nonlinearities and parameter uncertainties encountered in real applications. Comparative results demonstrate superior speed regulation and speed tracking, reduced estimation error, and faster convergence of the adaptive tuning signal for better speed estimation compared to the PI-MRAS observer. The proposed scheme provides the suitable choice of traction drive adoption for electric vehicle (EV) applications.
