An extremal principle is formulated for thermodynamic systems near equilibrium subjected to various external conditions. It is shown that the principle describes unambiguously the kinetics of the thermodynamic system and replaces classical phenomenological equations. The global formulation of the principle makes it possible i) to introduce discrete characteristic parameters for the proper description of the state and evolution of the system, ii) to take into account constraints amongst the characteristic parameters of the local or global character and iii) to derive the evolution equations for the characteristic parameters. These facts turn the principle into an effective tool for the treatment of non-equilibrium thermodynamic systems.
Existing oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys are, besides Ni-based superalloy single crystals, the most creep-resistant materials. The creep resistance of the ODS alloys may, moreover, be significantly improved thanks to increasing the volume fraction of the nano oxides by more than one order of magnitude so that the oxides play a decisive role in strengthening. The present experimental study deals with two systems of such a high-volume fraction of nano oxides, namely, the Fe-11Al-1O and Fe-17Cr-7Al-4Y2O3 systems prepared by mechanical alloying and hot rolling leading to a rather stable fine-grained microstructure. This microstructure undergoes static recrystallization at high temperatures. The kinetics of static recrystallization and coarsening of nano oxides in recrystallized grains is determined for both systems. The difference in kinetics of coarsening of Al-based and Y-based oxides in the Fe-11Al-1O and Fe-17Cr-7Al-4Y2O3 systems is expressive and predetermines the Fe-17Cr-7Al-4Y2O3 system or similar ones to become the new leading system among creep- and oxidation-resistant materials for applications up to 1200 °C.
Digital twins are the most important parts of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and play a crucial role in the realization of the Metaverse. Therefore, two important factors: flexibility and adaptability, need to be focused on digital twinning systems. From a virtual perspective, constructing buildings, structures, and mechanisms in the Metaverse requires digital materials and components. Hence, accurate and reliable digital models can guarantee the success of implementation, particularly when it comes to completing physical twins in the real world. Accordingly, four Machine Learning (ML) methods to make digital twins of an advanced 42SiCr alloy considering all of its uncertainties and non-linearities have been employed in this paper. These ML methods accelerate the digitalization of the proposed alloy and allow users to employ them for a wide range of similar metals. Based on this technique, producers can borrow these virtual materials and build their structures in the Metaverse. This way, if the properties of the materials were satisfactory, they might buy them and start manufacturing their products. As a case study, we focus on digital twining of an 42SiCr steel with some influential factors in its mechanical properties, making the nature of the alloy complex. Processes, including heat treatment, may restore the material’s deformability; however, Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) not only eliminates the impact of cold forming but also provides advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) properties. In this research, the combined impacts of different Q&P treatments were investigated on the mechanical properties of 42SiCr steel alloy. The results have shown the acceptability and accuracy of the proposed ML methods in realizing the digital twins of this complex alloy.
The concept of digital twinning is essential for smart manufacturing and cyber-physical systems to be connected to the Metaverse. These digital representations of physical objects can be used for real-time analysis, simulations, and predictive maintenance. A combination of smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, and the Metaverse can lead to sustainable productivity in industries. This paper presents a practical approach to implementing digital twins of a magnetic forging holder that was designed and manufactured in this project. Thus, this paper makes two important contributions: the first contribution is the manufacturing of the holder, and the second significant contribution is the creation of its digital twin. The holder benefits from a special design and implementation, making it a user-friendly and powerful tool in materials research. More specifically, it can be employed for the thermomechanical influencing of the structure and, hence, the final properties of the materials under development. In addition, this mechanism allows us to produce a new type of creep-resistant composite material based on Fe, Al, and Y. The magnetic forging holder consolidates the powder material to form a solid state after mechanical alloying. We produce bars from the powder components using a suitable forging process in which extreme grain coarsening occurs after the final heat treatment. This is one of the conditions for achieving very high resistance to creep at high temperatures.
New-generation oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys with a high volume fraction of nano-oxides of 5% are intended to become the leading creep- and oxidation-resistant alloys for applications at 1100–1300 °C. Hot consolidation of mechanically alloyed powders by intensive plastic deformation followed by heat treatment of the alloys are the key aspects for achieving top creep properties, typically ensured by a coarse-grained microstructure strengthened with homogeneously dispersed, very stable yttrium nano-oxides. The rotary swaging method proves to be favourable for hot consolidation of the new-generation ODS alloy presented. Compared to specimens consolidated by hot rolling, consolidation by hot rotary swaging predetermines the formation of coarse grains with a very high aspect ratio during subsequent secondary recrystallization. Such a grain morphology increases the creep strength of the new-generation ODS alloy considerably.
The aim of the paper is to evaluate the effect of aluminum content on the oxidation resistance of new-generation of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy at 1200 °C. Three grades of the alloy of chemical composition Fe-15Cr-xAl-4Y2O3 with different Al contents x = 0.3 wt.%, 2.0 wt.% and 5.5 wt.% are prepared by mechanical alloying. The alloys are consolidated by high temperature rolling followed by heat treatment. To study the oxidation resistance the samples are isothermally aged in the air for 1 h, 4 h, 16 h and 64 h at 1200 °C. The oxidation kinetics, composition and formation mechanism of the oxide layers are analyzed. The weight gain of prepared steels is estimated. The kinetics of oxidation is studied on metallographic cross-sections of the exposed samples by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The oxides on the surfaces are identified by X‑ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The Al content significantly enhances the oxidation resistance of the alloy. For a sufficiently high Al content in the alloy a compact oxide layer of α‑Al2O3 on the surface is formed, which significantly suppresses further oxidation process.
