The 21st century presents unprecedented challenges and opportunities for industrial organizations. Rapid technological advancements, globalization, climate change, major changes in business practices, and shifting consumer expectations, in addition to much bigger, complex, and most importantly, multidisciplinary projects, cause a tremendous impact on how organizations are managed. This article’s contribution primarily focuses on contemporary management, its characteristics, features, and some of its differences from classical management of the 20th century. In the limited space, we describe some important principles on which current management should be built so that companies can successfully face the complex situation in the global market and maintain and strengthen their competitiveness. This article also explores the evolving nature of strategic management in this dynamic context, examining key shifts in strategic thinking, the rise of new strategic approaches, and the critical role of foresight and adaptability.

Industry 4.0 has become a key driver of industrial digital transformation, enabling enterprises to improve productivity, flexibility, and competitiveness through the integration of advanced digital technologies. Although the strategic importance of Industry 4.0 is widely recognized, the pace and maturity of its implementation vary considerably across enterprises and regions. This study presents a longitudinal evaluation of Industry 4.0 adoption in the Slovak Republic based on annual Industry4UM survey data collected between 2017 and 2025. The analysis focuses on three indicators: the size distribution of participating enterprises, the implementation phase of Industry 4.0, and the perceived importance of Industry 4.0 for future business development. The results indicate that the survey maintained participation from enterprises of different sizes throughout the observation period, providing a broad representation of the Slovak industrial environment. The implementation analysis revealed a gradual increase in the proportion of enterprises reaching the adaptation phase, accompanied by a substantial decline in the number of organizations that had not yet initiated Industry 4.0 activities. At the same time, respondents consistently expressed a highly positive perception of Industry 4.0, while negative attitudes remained negligible. A comparison of enterprise perception and implementation demonstrates that awareness of Industry 4.0 has advanced more rapidly than practical adoption, indicating that the principal challenge is no longer recognizing the importance of digital transformation but facilitating its effective implementation. The findings provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Industry 4.0 adoption in Slovak industry and offer insights that may support policymakers, researchers, and industrial practitioners in designing future digital transformation strategies. In this article, we also examine the State of Israel’s approach to Industry 4.0 from several perspectives. We focus on how both the Israeli industrial sector and government agencies support and implement Industry 4.0. Israeli government agencies, businesses, and institutions also focus on social and economic issues and on structural changes in the labour market related to Industry 4.0.
