When the use of optical images is not practical due to cloud cover, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is a preferred alternative for monitoring coastal wetlands because it is unaffected by weather conditions. Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) enables the detection of different backscattering mechanisms and thus has potential applications in land cover classification. Gaofen-3 (GF-3) is the first Chinese civilian satellite with multi-polarized C-band SAR imaging capability. Coastal wetland classification with GF-3 polarimetric SAR imagery has attracted increased attention in recent years, but it remains challenging. The aim of this study was to classify land cover in coastal wetlands using an object-oriented random forest algorithm on the basis of GF-3 polarimetric SAR imagery. First, a set of 16 commonly used SAR features was extracted. Second, the importance of each SAR feature was calculated, and the optimal polarimetric features were selected for wetland classification by combining random forest (RF) with sequential backward selection (SBS). Finally, the proposed algorithm was utilized to classify different land cover types in the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands. The results show that the most important parameters for wetland classification in this study were Shannon entropy, Span and orientation randomness, combined with features derived from Yamaguchi decomposition, namely, volume scattering, double scattering, surface scattering and helix scattering. When the object-oriented RF classification approach was used with the optimal feature combination, different land cover types in the study area were classified, with an overall accuracy of up to 92%.

The purpose of this study was to examine how different polarimetric parameters and an object-based approach influence the classification results of various land use/land cover types using fully polarimetric ALOS PALSAR data over coastal wetlands in Yancheng, China. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, five other classifications (the Wishart supervised classification, the proposed method without polarimetric parameters, the proposed method without an object-based analysis, the proposed method without textural and geometric information and the proposed method using the nearest-neighbor classifier) were applied for comparison. The results indicated that some polarimetric parameters, such as Shannon entropy, Krogager_Kd, Alpha, HAAlpha_T11, VanZyl3_Vol, Derd, Barnes2_T33, polarization fraction, Barnes1_T33, Neuman_delta_mod and entropy, greatly improved the classification results. The shape index was a useful feature in distinguishing fish ponds and rivers. The distance to the sea can be regarded as an important factor in reducing the confusion between herbaceous wetland vegetation and grasslands. Furthermore, the decision tree algorithm increased the overall accuracy by 6.8% compared with the nearest neighbor classifier. This research demonstrated that different polarimetric parameters and the object-based approach significantly improved the performance of land cover classification in coastal wetlands using ALOS PALSAR data.

The utilization of advanced remote sensing methods to monitor the coastal wetlands is essential for conservation and sustainable development. With multiple polarimetric channels, the polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) is increasingly employed in land cover classification and information extraction, as it has more scattering information than regular SAR images. Polarimetric decomposition is often used to extract scattering information from polarimetric SAR. However, distinguishing all land cover types using only one polarimetric decomposition in complex ecological environments such as coastal wetlands is not easy, and thus integration of multiple decomposition algorithms is an effective means of land cover classification. More than 20 decompositions were used in this research to extract polarimetric scattering features. Furthermore, a new algorithm combining random forest (RF) with sequential forward selection (SFS) was applied, in which the importance values of all polarimetric features can be evaluated quantitatively, and the polarimetric feature set can be optimized. The experiments were conducted in the Jiangsu coastal wetlands, which are located in eastern China. This research demonstrated that the classification accuracies were improved relative to regular decision tree methods, and the process of polarimetric scattering feature set optimization was intuitive. Furthermore, the scattering matrix elements and scattering features derived from H / α , Yamaguchi3, VanZyl3, and Krogager decompositions were determined to be very supportive of land cover identification in the Jiangsu coastal wetlands.

Although constructing a dam can bring significant economic and social benefits to a region, it can be catastrophic for the population living downstream when it breaks. Given the dynamic and nonlinear characteristics of dam deformation, the traditional dam prediction model has been unable to meet the actual engineering demands. Consequently, this paper advocates for a novel method to solve this issue. The proposed method is based on the optimization of improved chicken swarm (ICSO) and support vector machine (SVM). To begin with, the mean square error is used as the objective function, and then, we apply the improved chicken swarm algorithm to iterate continuously, and finally, the optimal SVM parameters are obtained. Through the modeling and simulation experiments of a nonlinear system, the validity of the improved chicken swarm algorithm to optimize an SVM model has been verified. Based on the horizontal displacement monitoring data of FengMan Dam, this paper analyzed the influencing factors of horizontal displacement. According to the results, three prediction models have been established, respectively: the SVM prediction model optimized by the improved chicken swarm algorithm, the SVM prediction model optimized by the basic chicken swarm algorithm and the BP neural network prediction model optimized by the genetic algorithm. The obtained results from the experiment authenticate the validity and superiority of the proposed method.

Time-series monitoring of the land subsidence in the Yangtze River coastal area is crucial for maintaining river stability and early warning of disasters. This study employed PS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR techniques to monitor the land subsidence along the Yangtze River in Nanjing, using a total of 42 Sentinel-1A images obtained between April 2015 and November 2021. The accuracy of both methods was compared and validated, while a comprehensive analysis was conducted to ascertain the spatial distribution characteristics and underlying causes of land subsidence. The maximum deviation between the two methods and six leveling point data did not exceed ±5 mm. Within the 5 km buffer zone on either side of the Yangtze River in Nanjing, four subsidence funnels were identified. Analysis of the factors contributing to land subsidence in this area indicates that underground engineering construction and operation, increasing ground building area, and geological condition all have certain correlations to the land subsidence. The results obtained through PS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR technologies revealed a high degree of consistency in monitoring outcomes, and the latter method exhibited superior monitoring accuracy than the former one in this area. This study holds significant implications for guiding the scientific management of urban geohazards along the Yangtze River.
