Dr. Kemal Büyükgüzel is a Professor of Biology at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEUN), Türkiye, having held positions such as Vice-Rector and Dean. He earned his B.Sc. (1991), M.Sc. (1993), and Ph.D. (1999) in Biology/Zoology/Insect Physiology and Biochemistry from Ankara University and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, as a TÜBİTAK NATO-B1 fellow. His primary research focuses on insect biochemistry, comparative physiology, ecotoxicology, and eicosanoid-mediated immunity, specializing in mass-rearing the biocontrol agent Pimpla turionellae on artificial diets. Prof. Büyükgüzel has pioneered studies on prostaglandin biosynthesis, cellular immunity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant dynamics using model organisms like Galleria mellonella, Drosophila melanogaster, Bracon hebetor, and P. turionellae. His work also explores the insecticidal modes of action of clinical antibacterial, anthelmintic, antifungal, and antiviral pharmaceuticals. Holding a national patent on boric acid biopesticides, he has published in high-impact journals and presented findings globally with support from BEUN, AstraZeneca, The Company of Biologists, and IUBMB. A member of the Entomological Society of America, Turkish Society of Toxicology, and Turkish Biochemical Society, Prof. Büyükgüzel has received several scientific awards.
