This paper presents the design and evaluates the system performance of one-kilowatt capacity asynchronous and synchronous buck converter based solar-powered charging systems for battery-driven electric vehicles. The dc motor-operated three-wheeler rickshaw was taken for testing the systems, where a battery bank containing four series-connected sub-colloid storage type batteries of each with a capacity of 12V, 120Ah has been used. PSIM simulation software has been used to evaluate the performances of these two types of battery charging systems. Hardware prototypes of these two types of charging systems have also been made and an experimental testbed comprising a 48V battery bank of 100Ah capacity with a charging current of 6A was performed. The experimental results have also been evaluated and compared.

This study focuses on the implementation of web based low cost yet effective remote laboratory system for engineering education to utilize limited resources for improving engineering student's practical knowledge as well as self learning ability. The proposed system provides practical experience to the students in the field of power electronics and telecommunications. This lab allows the students to perform experiment by controlling various experimental apparatus on real time from their home or any preferred location using the internet connection. Several experiments related to Power electronics and Telecommunications have been designed for this remote lab. The system is flexible and the range of laboratory experiments can be expanded as required without any complexity. This initializes an openly integrated environment which facilitates the sharing of not only hardware resources, but also educational material for enhancing engineering education in developing countries like Bangladesh.

This Paper is aimed to present the design and implementation of a one kilowatt capacity single phase grid tie photovoltaic inverter. The proposed design and simulation process of this system is in PSIM simulation environment. The reason for choosing the software PSIM is that it provides the solar module facilities. For single phase grid tie inverter design some special types of consideration, like reference voltage creation to synchronise the inverter's output with grid, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal creation by comparing the reference and triangular wave, is designed and simulated precisely. According to the PWM pulses, the solar module provided DC voltage is switched by using single phase bridge inverter circuit. After filtering and matching the inverter's AC output wave's amplitude and frequency with grid, this AC power is given to the grid by using isolation transformer. All of these fundamental criteria of an inverter are met in this inverter design. After analysing the simulated output a hardware prototype is also implemented. In hardware prototype, according to the reference signal, PIC18F4431 microcontroller is used for generating the PWM pulses. These PWM pulses act as the switching controlling pulses for IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor).

This paper documents an efficient, cost-effective and sustainable grid-connected electric vehicles (EVs) battery charger based on a buck converter to reduce the harmonics injected into the mains power line. To utilize the switching converter as an effective power factor controller (PFC), inverse sinusoidal pulse width modulation (ISPWM) signals have been applied. A mathematical relationship between the sending-end power factor and the duty ratio of the switching converter has been presented. To ensure the sustenance of the proposed method, a simulation model of the proposed battery charging system has been tested on PSIM simulation platform. The simulation results yield to a lossless charging system with a sending-end power factor close to unity. An experimental testbed comprising a 60 V battery bank of 100 A-h capacity with a charging current of 7 A has been generated. The laboratory assessments present an 88.1% efficient charging prototype with a resultant sending-end power factor of 0.89. The laboratory framework concerns with the comparative analysis of the power efficiency, sending-end power factor and lines current total harmonic distortion (THD) values obtained for different charging methods and the evaluations corroborate the reliability of the proposed work.

In Bangladesh, approximately 3900 square miles of entire length is surrounded by 700 rivers including tributaries. Around 770,000 inland and 510,000 marine fishermen survive in this country, whose income entirely depends on fisheries. Bangladeshi fishermen mainly use trawler for fishing purpose in sea and river. Those trawler boats require electric power at night for fishing and lighting purposes. Currently, in a trawler, electric power is supplied by a battery which is charged through a dynamo synchronized with trawler engine. These dynamos require diesel to serve electric power. In this paper, a novel MPPT-based solar power system for fishing trawler is discussed to reduce fuel consumption. This paper defines a method of extracting the maximum current from the PV cell to quickly charge a lead acid cell battery during its “bulk” or constant current charging phase. A PID controller is implemented to ensure that the DC-DC buck converter maintains a constant current output regardless of the charge level of the battery as long as it is in the bulk charging stage. The simulation and hardware results show that the algorithm has been optimized for commercially available 24V PV cells.

As the power grid is improving and increasing in size day by day, new systems must be developed and designed to control and negate the newly arising problems. This paper proposes a new system to stabilize the voltage fluctuations in grid which often occur in some situations. For example, when a large number of distributed generating resources are connected to the grid and when the load fluctuates rapidly. A system has been proposed here as a solution to the problem of under voltage problems in grid. Whenever distributed generating units such as photovoltaic cells and micro turbines are connected to the grid, the grid voltage increases above the upper acceptable level. During the over voltage situations, the proposed system will be deactivated and the energy storage system will get power from the grid; as a result, the grid-voltage will decrease to an acceptable level. The paper also describes a Grid Tie Inverter (GTI) for the system. The system consists of a monitoring mechanism which continuously monitors the grid-voltage fluctuations. If the grid-voltage falls down to a certain level the control unit will send a command to boost converter unit to boost up the voltage level of the energy storage system. In order to keep the grid-voltage constant no matter how much the load fluctuates, the boosted DC power will then be fed into the grid by using the GTI. The proposed system has been demonstrated through PSIM simulation software. The electronic controlling part of the system has been designed and demonstrated through the Proteus simulation software.
