A high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding structure based on pure graphene (without doping) consists of several graphene sheets separated by transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. We report the theoretical and experimental design, and characterization of the multi-layer graphene/PET structures. With a total graphene thickness of only 4 nm, the graphene/PET sample demonstrated an average shielding effectiveness of 19.14 dB at 18–26.5 GHz, with a maximum microwave absorbance of 95.82% at 25.7 GHz, while maintaining a normalized visible transmittance of 80.5%. For the multi-layer graphene/PET samples, the contribution of absorption to the total shielding exceeds 96%, indicating that absorption is the dominant shielding mechanism, instead of reflection. The microwave absorbance of the multi-layer graphene/PET structure increases rapidly from the mono- to the four-layer structures, and then more gradually as the number of layers continues to increase when the thickness of PET is 1 mm. In addition, the microwave absorbance can be improved two-fold by increasing the separation between graphene layers. We believe that this multi-layer graphene/PET structure, which exhibits high-performance microwave absorption and shielding, has great potential for applications in transparent EMI shielding devices, especially if EMI absorption is required.

Our daily electromagnetic environment is becoming increasingly complex with the rapid development of consumer electronics and wireless communication technologies, which in turn necessitates the development of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, especially for transparent components. We engineered a transparent EMI shielding film with crack-template based metallic mesh (CT-MM) that shows highly homogeneous light transmission and strong microwave shielding efficacy. The CT-MM film is fabricated using a cost-effective lift-off method based on a crackle template. It achieves a shielding effectiveness of ~26 dB, optical transmittance of ~91% and negligible impact on optical imaging performance. Moreover, high–quality CT-MM film is demonstrated on a large–calibre spherical surface. These excellent properties of CT-MM film, together with its advantages of facile large-area fabrication and scalability in processing on multi-shaped substrates, make CT-MM a powerful technology for transparent EMI shielding in practical applications.

We proposed two noise-robust iterative methods for phase retrieval and diffractive imaging based on the Pauta criterion and the smoothness constraint. The work is to address the noise issue plaguing the application of iterative phase retrieval algorithms in coherent diffraction imaging. It is demonstrated by numerical analysis and experimental results that our proposed algorithms have higher retrieval accuracy and faster convergence speed at a high shot noise level. Moreover, they are proved to hold the superiority to cope with other kinds of noises. Due to the inconvenience of conventional iteration indicators in experiments, a more reliable retrieval metric is put forward and verified its effectiveness. It should be noted that the proposed methods focus on exploiting the longitudinal diversity. It is anticipated that our work can further expand the application of iterative multi-image phase retrieval methods.

Accurate pattern transfer in wafer scanners necessitates the wafer stage and the reticle stage executing a coordinated motion with the synchronization error in terms of nanometers. In an attempt to cope with this challenging issue, a cross-coupling iterative learning control (ILC) with two inputs and two outputs is proposed and then decomposed into two ILC with the same convergence condition, a master–slave ILC for the reticle stage and an independent ILC for the wafer stage. To handle the inevitable stochastic disturbance, which inhibits the achievable ILC performance, an adaptive gain is involved in the proposed method for the sake of accelerated convergence as well as enhanced robustness. It remains constant or is decreased adaptively along the iteration axis, depending on the proportion that the stochastic term accounts for in the error signal. Moreover, a phase leader is chosen as the learning filter and tuned along with the initial learning gain by a frequency-domain approach. Experimental comparisons with existing close yet distinctive approaches highlight the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

A design and optimization method based on vectorial angular spectrum theory is proposed in this paper for the vectorial design of a super-oscillatory lens (SOL), so that the radially polarized vector beam can be tightly focused. The structure of a SOL is optimized using genetic algorithm and the computational process is accelerated using fast Hankel transform algorithm. The optimized results agree well with what is obtained using the vectorial Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral. For an oil immersed SOL, a subwavelength focal spot of about 0.25 illumination wavelength without any significant side lobe can be created at a distance of 184.86μm away from a large SOL with a diameter of 1mm. The proposed vectorial design method can be used to efficiently design a SOL of arbitrary size illuminated by various vector beams, with the subwavelength hotspot located in a post-evanescent observation plane.
