Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites or secondary metabolites produced by fungi and exist widely in all kinds of food and feed raw materials. They have led to many poisoning events and brought huge economic losses to livestock and poultry breeders every year. At present, the main challenges in the field of feed mycotoxin prevention and control are the high contamination rate, high coexistence rate, high detection cost and lagging research and development of prevention and control technology. Based on research data and results published by Chinese scholars in academic journals at home and abroad in recent years, this paper summarizes the status and causes of mycotoxin contamination in different feeds in China. At the same time, problems exist in the detection of mycotoxin contamination in Chinese feed. It is hoped to provide guidelines for the prevention and control of mycotoxin contamination.

The increased sensitivity of pigs to ambient temperature is due to today’s intensive farming. Frequent climate disasters increase the pressure on healthy pig farming. Min pigs are an indigenous pig breed in China with desirable cold resistance characteristics, and hence are ideal for obtaining cold-resistant pig breeds. Therefore, it is important to discover the molecular mechanisms that are activated in response to cold stress in the Min pig. Here, we conducted a transcriptomic analysis of the skeletal muscle of Min pigs under chronic low-temperature acclimation (group A) and acute short cold stress (group B). Cold exposure caused more genes to be upregulated. Totals of 125 and 96 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were generated from groups A and B. Sixteen common upregulated DEGs were screened; these were concentrated in oxidative stress (SRXN1,MAFF), immune and inflammatory responses (ITPKC,AREG,MMP25,FOSL1), the nervous system (RETREG1,GADD45A,RCAN1), lipid metabolism (LRP11,LIPG,ITGA5,AMPD2), solute transport (SLC19A2,SLC28A1,SLCO4A1), and fertility (HBEGF). There were 102 and 73 genes that were specifically differentially expressed in groups A and B, respectively. The altered mRNAs were enriched in immune, endocrine, and cancer pathways. There were 186 and 91 differentially expressed lncRNAs generated from groups A and B. Analysis of the target genes suggested that they may be involved in regulating the MAPK signaling pathway for resistance to cold. The results of this study provide a comprehensive overview of cold exposure–induced transcriptional patterns in skeletal muscle of the Min pig. These results can guide future molecular studies of cold stress response in pigs for improving cold tolerance as a goal in breeding programs.

Adipose tissue is conventionally recognized as a metabolic organ responsible for storing energy. However, a proportion of adipose tissue also functions as a thermogenic organ, contributing to the inhibition of weight gain and prevention of metabolic diseases. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the study of thermogenic fats, particularly brown adipose tissue (BAT). Despite this progress, the mechanism underlying thermogenesis in beige adipose tissue remains highly controversial. It is widely acknowledged that beige adipose tissue has three additional thermogenic mechanisms in addition to the conventional UCP1-dependent thermogenesis: Ca2+ cycling thermogenesis, creatine substrate cycling thermogenesis, and triacylglycerol/fatty acid cycling thermogenesis. This paper delves into these three mechanisms and reviews the latest advancements in the molecular regulation of thermogenesis from the molecular genetic perspective. The objective of this review is to provide readers with a foundation of knowledge regarding the beige fats and a foundation for future research into the mechanisms of this process, which may lead to the development of new strategies for maintaining human health.

Meat quality is one of the most important economic traits in pig breeding and production. Intramuscular fat (IMF) is a major factor that improves meat quality. To better understand the alternative splicing (AS) events underlying meat quality, long-read isoform sequencing (Iso-seq) was used to identify differential (D)AS events between the longissimus thoracis (LT) and semitendinosus (ST), which differ in IMF content, together with short-read RNA-seq. Through Iso-seq analysis, we identified a total of 56,789 novel transcripts covering protein-coding genes, lncRNA, and fusion transcripts that were not previously annotated in pigs. We also identified 456,965 AS events, among which 3930 were DAS events, corresponding to 2364 unique genes. Through integrative analysis of Iso-seq and RNA-seq, we identified 1174 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), among which 122 were DAS genes, i.e., DE-DAS genes. There are 12 overlapped pathways between the top 20 DEGs and DE-DAS genes, as revealed by KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) analysis, indicating that DE-DAS genes play important roles in the differential phenotype of LT and ST. Further analysis showed that upregulated DE-DAS genes are more important than downregulated ones in IMF deposition. Fatty acid degradation and the PPAR (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor) signaling pathway were found to be the most important pathways regulating the differential fat deposition of the two muscles. The results update the existing porcine genome annotations and provide data for the in-depth exploration of the mechanisms underlying meat quality and IMF deposition.

Changes in the environment such as high-altitude hypoxia (HAH) high-altitude hypoxia can lead to adaptive changes in the blood system of mammals. However, there is limited information about the adaptation of Holstein dairy cows introduced to high-altitude areas. This study used 12 multiparous Holstein dairy cows (600 ± 55 kg, average three years old) exposed to HAH conditions in Nyingchi of Tibet (altitude 3000 m) and HAH-free conditions in Shenyang (altitude 50 m). The miRNA microarray analysis and iTRAQ proteomics approach (accepted as more suitable for accurate and comprehensive prediction of miRNA targets) were applied to explore the differences in the plasma proteomic and miRNA profiles in Holstein dairy cows. A total of 70 differential miRNAs (54 up-regulated, Fold change (FC) FC > 2, and 16 down-regulated, FC < 0.5) and 226 differential proteins (132 up-regulated, FC > 1.2, and 94 down-regulated, FC < 0.8) were found in the HAH-stressed group compared with the HAH-free group. Integrative analysis of proteomic and miRNA profiles demonstrated the biological processes associated with differential proteins were the immune response, complement activation, protein activation, and lipid transport. The integrative analysis of canonical pathways were most prominently associated with the APR signaling (z = 1.604), and LXR/RXR activation (z = 0.365), and FXR/RXR activation (z = 0.446) pathways. The current results indicated that Holstein dairy cows exposed to HAH could adapt to high-altitude hypoxia by up-regulating the APR, activating the LXR/RXR and FXE/RXR pathways.

This study presented two high-precision telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies for Min and Rongchang pigs, including a detailed exploration of the telomeric and centromeric regions. By integrating pan-genome and multi-omics analyses, structural variations linked to genetic adaptation were identified, providing a valuable resource for advancing pig breeding and genetic improvement.
