Human infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first reported in late 2019 in Wuhan city of Hubei province in China.1,2 The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020. The ongoing epidemic has since affected more than 150 countries and territories. As of August 5, 2020, more than 18 million cases have been confirmed and more than 650 000 people have died.3

Devastating health effects from recent heat waves in China have highlighted the importance of understanding health consequences from extreme heat stress. Despite the increasing mortality from extreme heat, very limited studies have quantified the effects of summer extreme temperature on heat-related illnesses in China. The associations between extreme heat and daily heat-related illnesses that occurred in the summers of 2011-2013 in Ningbo, China, have been examined, using a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) based on 3862 cases. The excess morbidities of heat-related illness during each heat wave have been calculated separately and the cumulative heat wave effects on age-, sex-, and cause-specific illnesses in each year along lags have been estimated as well. After controlling the effect of relative humidity, it is found that maximum temperature, rather than heat index, was a better predictor of heat-related illnesses in summers. A positive association between maximum temperatures and occurrence of heat-related diseases was apparent, especially at short lag effects. Six heat waves during the period of 2011-2013 were identified and all associated with excess heat-related illnesses. Relative to the average values for the corresponding periods in 2011 and 2012, a total estimated 679 extra heat-related illnesses occurred during three heat waves in 2013. The significant prolonged heat wave effects on total heat-related illnesses during heat waves in three study years have also been identified. The strongest cumulative effect of heat waves was on severe heat diseases in 2013, with a 10-fold increased risk. More males than females, individuals with more severe forms of illness, were more affected by the heat. However, all age groups were vulnerable. Recent heat waves had a substantial and delayed effect on heat illnesses in Ningbo. Relevant active well-organized public health initiatives should be implemented to reduce the adverse effects of heat extremes on the illnesses.

Autochthonous dengue infections have not been reported in Ningbo, People’s Republic of China since 1929. In August–October 2004, an outbreak of dengue fever was confirmed in Xiaolin, Cixi, Ningbo. Of 83 cases reported, 68 were laboratory confirmed. Fifty-three percent (34 of 64) of the cases had IgM antibodies to dengue virus. Dengue virus serotype-1 was isolated from two cases. The outbreak was linked to a traveler who returned from Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the Ningbo isolate was closely associated to strains from Thailand. Prevalence of dengue-specific IgG in asymptomatic residents was significantly higher in the epidemic-stricken area than in a control area. High density of Aedes albopictus, which resulted from waterlogging caused by Typhoon Rananim and lifestyle of local residents, was responsible for rapid spread of the virus. Eradication of mosquito infestation might interrupt transmission. This outbreak underscores the importance of maintaining surveillance and control of potential vectors for the control of emerging infectious diseases.

The vulnerability of young people to HIV and the recent emergence of the HIV epidemic in China have made it urgent to assess and update the HIV/STD risk profile of Chinese young people. A self-administered questionnaire survey with cross-sectional design was conducted among 22,493 undergraduate students in two universities in Ningbo, China. Bivariate trend analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to compare sexual behaviors and awareness between grades. Of respondents, 17.6% of males and 8.6% of females reported being sexually active. Condom was reported never/rarely used by 35% of sexually active students in both genders in the previous year. Pregnancy and induced abortion had each been experienced by about 10% of sexually active female students and the female partners of male students, and about 1.5% of sexually active students of both genders reported being diagnosed with an STD. Multivariate analysis revealed that students in lower grades, compared to those in higher grades, were more likely to have become sexually active before university, to have become aware of sex before high school, and to have been exposed to pornographic media before the age of 17 years, and for sexually active respondents of both genders, to have engaged in sex without using a condom. Sexual behaviors of Chinese university students are poorly protected and sexual behaviors and awareness may have been undergoing rapid change, becoming active earlier and more risky. If this trend continues, vulnerable sexual network will grow among them that allow more expansion of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
