Dr. Pierre Vogel is an Honorary Professor of the Swiss Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), where he still has a small research group searching for new chemotherapies against cancers. First at the University of Lausanne (1973–2001), and then at the EPFL (2001–2010), he invented new organic chemistry, new reagents, and new catalytic systems that now find applications in medicinal chemistry, including combinatorial synthesis of anthracyclines, of bioactive natural products, and of analogues such as polyketides, polypropionates, and sugar mimetics (aza-sugars, a C-disaccharide based anticancer vaccine candidate). His group found that many C–C bond forming reactions can be mediated by iron catalysts. In 2019, together with Professor Kendall N. Houk (UCLA), he published a textbook entitled: "Organic Chemistry, Theory, Reactivity and Mechanisms in Modern Synthesis" (Wiley-VCH). In 2022, he published with World Scientific the book "Sustainable Development. The Roles of Carbon and Bio-Carbon: An Introduction to Molecular Sciences."
