Dr. Christian Faul joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2017, where he is a tenured Professor in the Division of Nephrology within the Department of Medicine and in the Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology (CDIB). He is also the Head of the Section of Mineral Metabolism. He received his undergraduate training in cell and molecular biology at the Ruprecht Karls University Heidelberg in Germany from 1993-1999. He earned his PhD title at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx in 2005, and he conducted his postdoctoral research training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. In 2008, he became a faculty member in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Faul is an NIH-funded cell biologist with over 20 years of experience in studying pathomechanisms of kidney and heart diseases, and he has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts. A major focus of his research is on the effects of phosphate and its regulators, FGF23 and klotho, in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and aging. Dr. Faul is the editor of the first textbook on FGF23, and he is the founder and co-chair of the first Gordon Research Conference (GRC), with a focus on phosphate metabolism that was held for the first time in February of 2023. In fall of 2019, Dr. Faul founded a startup company (Alpha Young LLC) based on his translational research on klotho.
