The influence of graphene oxide (GO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber on the mechanical performance, durability, and microstructure of cement-based materials was investigated in this study. The results revealed that compared with a control sample, the mechanical strength and durability of cement-based materials were significantly improved by adding PVA fiber and GO. The compressive and flexural strength at 28 d were increased by 30.2% and 39.3%, respectively. The chloride migration coefficient at 28 d was reduced from 7.3 × 10−12 m2/s to 4.3 × 10−12 m2/s. Under a sulfate corrosion condition for 135 d, the compressive and flexural strength still showed a 13.9% and 12.3% gain, respectively. Furthermore, from the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) test, with the incorporation of GO, the cumulative porosity decreased from more than 0.13 cm3/g to about 0.03 cm3/g, and the proportion of large capillary pores reduced from around 80% to 30% and that of medium capillary pores increased from approximately 20% to 50%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed a significant amount of hydration products adhering to the surface of PVA fiber in the GO and PVA fiber modified sample. The addition of GO coupling with PVA fiber in cement-based materials could promote hydration of cement, refine the microstructure, and significantly improve mechanical strength and durability.

In this paper, rice husk ash (RHA) with different average pore diameters and specific surface areas was used to replace 10% slag in the preparation of alkali-activated slag (AAS) pastes. The effect of RHA addition on the shrinkage, hydration, and strength of AAS pastes was studied. The results show that RHA with a porous structure will pre-absorb part of the mixing water during paste preparation, resulting in a decrease in the fluidity of AAS pastes by 5–20 mm. RHA has a significant inhibitory effect on the shrinkage of AAS pastes. The autogenous shrinkage of AAS pastes decreases by 18–55% at 7 days, and the drying shrinkage decreases by 7–18% at 28 days. This shrinkage reduction effect weakens with the decrease in RHA particle size. RHA has no obvious effect on the type of hydration products of AAS pastes, whereas RHA after proper grinding treatment can significantly improve the hydration degree. Therefore, more hydration products are generated and fills the internal pores of the pastes, which significantly improves the mechanical properties of the AAS pastes. The 28 day compressive strength of sample R10M30 (the content of RHA is 10%, RHA milling time is 30 min) is 13 MPa higher than that of blank sample.

Surface protection has been accepted as an effective way to improve the durability of concrete. In this study, nanosilica (NS) was used to improve the impermeability of cement‐fly ash system and this kind of material was expected to be applied as surface protection material (SPM) for concrete. Binders composed of 70% cement and 30% fly ash (FA) were designed and nanosilica (NS, 0–4% of the binder) was added. Pore structure of the paste samples was evaluated by MIP and the fractal dimension of the pore structure was also discussed. Hydrates were investigated by XRD, SEM, and TG; the microstructure of hydrates was analyzed with SEM‐EDS. The results showed that in the C‐FA‐NS system, NS accelerated the whole hydration of the cement‐FA system. Cement hydration was accelerated by adding NS, and probably, the pozzolanic reaction of FA was slightly hastened because NS not only consumed calcium hydroxide by the pozzolanic reaction to induce the cement hydration but also acted as nucleation seed to induce the formation of C‐S‐H gel. NS obviously refined the pore structure, increased the complexity of the pore structure, and improved the microstructure, thereby significantly improving the impermeability of the cement‐FA system. This kind of materials would be expected to be used as SPM; the interface performance between SPM and matrix, such as shrinkage and bond strength, and how to cast it onto the surface of matrix should be carefully considered.
