Electric vehicles (EV) are found to be a good alternative for the conventional internal combustion (IC) engine vehicles in transportation sector due to its various advantages. Now-a-days, wireless charging of EV battery is preferred among the various methods used for charging EV battery. In this paper, extensive review is carried out on various methods used for wireless charging of an EV battery. Different techniques used for transferring power in wireless mode to charge the EV battery are static EV charging technique and dynamic EV charging technique. Static wireless EV battery charging technique adopts inductive and capacitive method for transferring power whereas, dynamic wireless EV battery charging technique adopts only inductive method for transferring power. These techniques are discussed thoroughly in this paper and broad review is carried out with a focus on the compensation circuit topologies, types of core for magnetic coupled inductors, different converters and controllers used for wireless power transfer (WPT) system. Also, design aspects of an static wireless EV battery charging system along with its equivalent circuit analysis is presented in this paper. Challenges and future development in wireless charging of EV battery is also explained in this paper.

The power transfer technique used to charge electric vehicles (EVs) has gone through a large development lately. Developing a purely autonomous vehicle has motivated researchers to implement the wireless power transfer technique to charge the EV battery. Previously developed EV used a pure grid-dependent charging system, increasing the net energy consumption from the grid. The vehicle weight also reduces the vehicle's reliability with the increase in the size of the battery. This limitation is eliminated by the proposed technique that uses a wireless EV battery charging system with a utility grid. This article presents an improved system for supplying photovoltaic (PV) power to an EV used in a grid-interfaced residential system. This power electronic converter-based interfacing system facilitates a bidirectional power flow technique for feeding extra PV panel power to the grid and charging the EV using utility grid power during the unavailability of solar power. A bidirectional cycloconverter is employed, which delivers a variable frequency concerning modes of operation of the system. The experimental prototype employs an opal-RT real-time simulator for integrating the proposed system into the grid. This article presents the comparison of the simulation and experimentation results of the wireless EV charging system.

Depletion of natural resources like gas, oil, coal along with environment pollution increased the popularity of the Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Power Electronic converters are utilized for conversion of power from RES to coordinate the stand‐alone load and utility grid. MPPT control is also established by these converters to supply the standalone or grid‐connected load despite of the RES's unpredictable nature. In order to reduce the number of switches used for integrating RES to drive loads, Multi‐port converters are developed. These converters have the capability to supply more than one load simultaneously. Furthermore, more number of RESs are connected using these converters in order to drive common loads. Available literatures do not explain in detail regarding various types of multi‐output converters, their advantages, disadvantages, application area and control techniques used in order to drive these converters. In this context, a review of recent advances in multi‐port DC‐DC converters for different application using hybrid RESs is carried out. Initially in literature, few DC‐DC converters are connected in parallel, series configuration and used as multi‐port converters. Multi‐stage conversion is realized using DC‐AC‐DC conversion. Advantages of conventional converters are integrated in order to develop derived multi‐output converters. These multi‐port converters have the capability to drive both DC and AC loads from a single DC input source. The converters share common power electronics equipment while generating both DC and AC power simultaneously. Furthermore, these multi‐port converters also use single step power conversion process which reduces the overall system loss. As these hybrid multi‐port converters use lesser number of power electronic switches, the control complexity of these converters reduces compared to the conventional converters connected in cascaded or parallel manner to drive loads. A detailed review of these multi‐port converters with respect to topologies, and operating principle, diverse reliability and effectiveness are presented in this paper. This survey helps designers to select the appropriate RES‐based multi‐port converters for their respective applications.

Fuzzy logic controller is developed for PV array fed interleaved dual buck-boost (IDBB) converter for EV battery charging applications. The inner dynamics of the IDBB converter is improved using the damping network. Irrespective of the change in solar insolation conditions, the developed fuzzy logic controller adjusts the duty ratio of the converter to obtain constant output voltage. Simulation studies have been carried out using MATLAB/Simulink software and Fuzzy Logic Controller modelled in MATLAB/Simulink software was interfaced with dSPACE1103 to carry out the experimental investigation in Hardware-in-loop methodology in dSPACE workstation. The experimental results are on-par with the simulated results validating the proposed system.

The proposed system facilitates uninterruptable charging of a photovoltaic (PV) fed plug-in electric vehicle (EV) battery charging system irrespective of solar irradiation conditions by integrating utility grid to the battery charging system. The system employs bidirectional cycloconverter (BDCC) in order to use utility grid as source or sink during different modes of operation which depends on the availability of solar power. During low irradiation condition, the utility grid acts as a backup source in order to facilitate uninterruptable charging of the EV battery. When surplus power is generated from the PV panel, it is fed to the utility grid, which acts as sink in this mode. For uninterruptable EV battery charging, the controller operates the switches and relays in the proposed system corresponding to solar irradiation level. The available literatures define complex control strategies which are solved in this proposed system by adopting a simple dynamic control algorithm. The simulation of the proposed system has been carried out using PSIM simulation software and experimental prototype has been designed, developed and tested for different modes of operations to validate the efficacy of the proposed system.
