The simulation of population dynamics and social processes is of great interest in nonlinear systems. Recently, many scholars have paid attention to the possible applications of population dynamics models, such as the competitive Lotka–Volterra equation, in economic, demographic and social sciences. It was found that these models can describe some complex behavioral phenomena such as marital behavior, the stable marriage problem and other demographic processes, possessing chaotic dynamics under certain conditions. However, the introduction of external factors directly into the continuous system can influence its dynamic properties and requires a reformulation of the whole model. Nowadays most of the simulations are performed on digital computers. Thus, it is possible to use special numerical techniques and discrete effects to introduce additional features to the digital models of continuous systems. In this paper we propose a discrete model with controllable phase-space volume based on the competitive Lotka–Volterra equations. This model is obtained through the application of semi-implicit numerical methods with controllable symmetry to the continuous competitive Lotka–Volterra model. The proposed model provides almost linear control of the phase-space volume and, consequently, the quantitative characteristics of simulated behavior, by shifting the symmetry of the underlying finite-difference scheme. We explicitly show the possibility of introducing almost arbitrary law to control the phase-space volume and entropy of the system. The proposed approach is verified through bifurcation, time domain and phase-space volume analysis. Several possible applications of the developed model to the social and demographic problems’ simulation are discussed. The developed discrete model can be broadly used in modern behavioral, demographic and social studies.

Sensors based on chaotic oscillators have a simple design, combined with high sensitivity and energy efficiency. Among many developed schemes of such sensors, the promising one is based on the Duffing oscillator, which possesses a remarkable property of demonstrating chaotic oscillations only in the presence of a weak sine wave at the input. The main goal of this research was to evaluate the maximal sensitivity of a practically implemented metal detector based on the Duffing oscillator and compare its sensitivity with conventional sensors. To achieve high efficiency of the Duffing-based design, we proposed an algorithm which performs a bifurcation analysis of any chaotic system, classifies the oscillation modes and determines the system sensitivity to a change in different parameters. We apply the developed algorithm to improve the sensitivity of the electronic circuit implementing the Duffing oscillator, serving as a key part of a three-coil metal detector. We show that the developed design allows detecting the presence of metal objects near the coils more reliably than the conventional signal analysis techniques, and the developed detector is capable of sensing a large metal plate at distances up to 2.8 of the coil diameter, which can be considered a state-of-the-art result.

The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is widely used for image and video compression. Lossy algorithms such as JPEG, WebP, BPG and many others are based on it. Multiple modifications of DCT have been developed to improve its performance. One of them is adaptive DCT (ADCT) designed to deal with heterogeneous image structure and it may be found, for example, in the HEVC video codec. Adaptivity means that the image is divided into an uneven grid of squares: smaller ones retain information about details better, while larger squares are efficient for homogeneous backgrounds. The practical use of adaptive DCT algorithms is complicated by the lack of optimal threshold search algorithms for image partitioning procedures. In this paper, we propose a novel method for optimal threshold search in ADCT using a metric based on tonal distribution. We define two thresholds: pm, the threshold defining solid mean coloring, and ps, defining the quadtree fragment splitting. In our algorithm, the values of these thresholds are calculated via polynomial functions of the tonal distribution of a particular image or fragment. The polynomial coefficients are determined using the dedicated optimization procedure on the dataset containing images from the specific domain, urban road scenes in our case. In the experimental part of the study, we show that ADCT allows a higher compression ratio compared to non-adaptive DCT at the same level of quality loss, up to 66% for acceptable quality. The proposed algorithm may be used directly for image compression, or as a core of video compression framework in traffic-demanding applications, such as urban video surveillance systems.

This study aims to measure the time allocated to child raising using parents’ self-assessment and the criterion of subjective time sufficiency or insufficiency. We surveyed 545 Russian parents from the Ural region and used factor analysis to identify the main determinants that affect the self-assessment of time allocated to parenting. We found that parents in the Russian Ural region believe they do not spend enough time with their children. Reasons for the insufficient amount of time allocated to parenting are the following: overload of labor duties at home and at work, psychological causes of intergenerational interaction, external reasons − studies, poor health, the need to care for other relatives and so on.

Mixed methods research is often used in studies involving young people. One of the key social problems in Russia today is low birth rates. However, there is little mixed methods research done into young people’s ideas about family and parenthood. This paper presents the results of research into the views on family and parenthood held by young people in Russia. The study uses convergent mixed methods design. We analysed data from two quantitative and one qualitative study. The use of mixed methods research has enabled us to conclude that family is one of the key life values for young people in Russia. They hold a positive image of family in their minds. Thus at the cognitive and emotional levels, there is a stable belief in the importance of family and children. This enables us to speak about the absence of a fundamental crisis of the family institution in Russian society, despite vigorous political and scientific debate on the issue. This study also offers further research directions based on the findings and results.
