Due to the increasing demand on developing good insulation, several researchers have performed experimental studies to prove the effectiveness and capabilities of transformer oil. This is done by suspending nanosized solid particles in the oil (nanofluid) for transformer applications. In brief, this paper presents a compilation of research studies which is divided into three parts. Part I discuss the preparation of the nanofluid which involves different types of nanomaterials, the optimal amount of concentrations, and applicable synthesisation methods for producing stably suspended nanofluids. In Part II, the nanofluid’s performances including the electrical breakdown voltages, impulse tests, and thermal and dielectric behaviour are reviewed in depth and compared. Part III emphasizes the limitation of nanofluids. Most researchers have agreed that appropriate concentrations of nanomaterials and the preparation method for nanofluids mainly affect the performance of nanofluids especially in terms of electrical properties. Meanwhile, types of nanomaterials and base oil also play a vital role in producing nanofluids as a better alternative transformer oil. However, among a few researchers, there are concerns regarding the issue of agglomeration and inconsistencies of findings that need to be resolved. Therefore, a few aspects must be taken into consideration to produce the next generation of high heat dissipation insulation.

Alternative transformer oil has been investigated universally in the past years. Different types of vegetable oil have been proposed and evaluated as replacements for conventional transformer oil (mineral oil) due to increasing exploitation and depleting petroleum reserves. In response to growing concern about global environmental and sustainable issues, this article discusses the suitability of palm oil (PO) and palm oil-based nanofluids (PO-N) as alternative transformer oils. A brief discussion of environmental concerns is provided in this paper, and the detailed properties of PO are thoroughly addressed. The electrical performance (alternating current breakdown voltage and lightning impulse breakdown voltage), physical behaviour (viscosity, flash point, and fire point), tan delta, and relative permittivity of PO and PO-N are also discussed in this paper. Based on reliable data and research, it has been proven that refined, bleached, deodorised palm oil (RBDPO) has been determined to be the most promising type of PO when compared to others. Furthermore, when CuO nanoparticles are added to RBDPO with the use of CTAB surfactant, the AC breakdown voltage increases by 173.42 % compared to RBDPO without CuO. However, there is still scope for further improvement in nanofluid stability. In addition to these studies, future research should focus on other aspects such as ageing studies, partial discharge breakdown voltage, etc. PO has interesting properties that make the industry and scientific community take notice.

This paper intends to prepare a nanofluid sample by suspending Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 0.005g/L concentration and analyze the behavior of electrical and dielectric properties based on the International Electrotechnical Commision test method. In order to validate the effectiveness of MWCNT nanofluid, alternating current breakdown voltage (BDV), negative polarity lightning impulse (LI), dielectric permittivity, dissipation factor (DF), DC resistivity and Raman structural measurement are executed accordingly. In the following, an analysis of the statistical distribution using the two-parameter Weibull distribution law of BDV and LI are evaluated at four experimental conditions to predict the probability of breakdown occurring at different percentages. Based on the observation, the MWCNT filler has a substantial effect in improving the BDV and LI characteristics of disposed mineral oil. The permittivity, DF and resistivity performance of MWCNT nanofluid from 25 °C to 90 °C also produces comparable and reliable performance as a fresh transformer oil. As for Raman structure, the revolution of transformer oil by doping MWCNT does not disrupt the original chemical structure of mineral oil. Hence, this study proves the improvement of the electrical and the behavior of dielectric properties and chemical structure of nanofluid, providing a huge contribution towards the development of insulating materials for transformer application.

This century is experiencing a generation of nanotechnologies that makes use of the remarkable properties of nanofluids in applications such as electrical systems, industrialization, and others. In this paper, mineral oil (MO) and palm oil (PO), with multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT), have been synthesized for use in oil-filled transformer applications. This research aims to use Raman characterization to assess the feasibility of CNT nanofluids samples at 0.02 g/L and 0.03 g/L concentrations. The chemical structure bonding that exists in the Raman band between 700 cm−1 and 3100 cm−1 regions is identified and analyzed, accordingly. After baseline removal and normalization, the precision band location and intensity of oil samples are fitted with a Gaussian profile. It was discovered that the peak at ~1440 cm−1 has the highest intensity for six oil samples, which is attributed to the (C–H) methylene scissors vibration of the CH2 group. Based on the FWHM profile and integrated area under the curve of PO, it was discovered that CNT contributes to the structural stability defect of PO. Principal component analysis (PCA) is also used in this study to classify different samples based on chemical composition and identify the spectral characteristics with the highest degree of variability.

MnCoGe-based compounds have been increasingly studied due to their possible large magnetocaloric effect correlated to the magnetostructural coupling. In this research, a comprehensive study of structure, magnetic phase transition, magnetocaloric effect and thermomechanical properties for MnCoGe1−xSix is reported. Room temperature X-ray diffraction indicates that the MnCoGe1−xSix (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2) alloys have a major phase consisting of an orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure with increasing lattice parameter b and decreasing others (a and c) with increasing Si concentration. Along with M-T and DSC measurements, it is indicated that the Tc value increased with higher Si concentration and decreased for structural transition temperature Tstr. The temperature dependence of the magnetization curves overlaps completely, indicating that there is no thermal hysteresis, and it is shown that the transition is the second-order type. It is also shown that the decreased magnetization on the replacement of Si for Ge decreases the value of −ΔSM from −ΔSM~8.36 J kg−1 K−1 at x = 0 to −ΔSM~5.49 J kg−1 K−1 at x = 0.2 with 5 T applied field. The performed Landau theory has confirmed the second-order transition in this study, which is consistent with the Banerjee criterion. The magnetic measurement and thermomechanical properties revealed the structural transition that takes place with Si substitution of Ge.

The critical behaviour associated with the field-induced martensitic transformation heavily relies on the vacancy and transition of the magnetic phase in MnCoGe based-compounds. Due to this revelation, an intensive investigation was brought forth to study the substitution of Ge (atomic radius = 1.23 Å) by Al (atomic radius = 1.43 Å) in MnCoGe0.97Al0.03 alloy compound. The room-temperature X-ray diffraction indicated that the reflections were identified with the orthorhombic structure (TiNiSi-type, space group Pnma) and minor hexagonal structure (Ni2In-type, space group P63/mmc). The substitution of Al in the supersession of Ge transmuted the crystal structure from TiNiSi-type to Ni2In-type structure. The MnCoGe0.97Al0.03 compound’s magnetism was driven by interactions that are long in range, as indicated by the study of the critical behaviour in the proximity of TC. The magnetic measurement and neutron diffraction revealed that the structural transition took place with the decrease in temperature. The results from neutron diffraction signify that the transformation of the magnetic field-induced martensitic has a crucial function in producing the immense effect of magnetocaloric systems such as these. This outcome serves a critical function for investigations in the future.
