Sustainability in the fashion industry is a contemporary megatrend that needs new studies addressing the myriad of possibilities that exist to reduce environmental impacts. Nonetheless, it is essential to take into account the opinions/wishes of the segments targeted by the business, a practice that has been neglected by textile and fashion companies. Value offers with greater circularity in textile and fashion businesses have suffered from a lack of consideration of the consumer’s perspective in their value propositions. Therefore, the objective of this research is to suggest circular strategies for the incorporation of the consumer’s perspective into value creation in the fashion industry. The methods used in this chapter encompass four steps: (i) building a theoretical background related to sustainable and circular fashion, and circular business models linked to the textile and fashion industry, which aided; (ii) building a survey to investigate issues on product design, value creation, and consumer participation in fashion companies in Brazil; (iii) identifying the main deficiencies on product design, value creation, and consumer participation in fashion businesses in Brazil; and (iv) proposing circular strategies to seek overcome the deficiencies identified. Twenty companies from three states in Brazil were surveyed. The results of the survey allowed identifying gaps in the knowledge of fashion companies in relation to consumers and also with regard to issues that involve the product’s life cycle from the conception, use, and disposal of post-use products by the consumer. Recommendations were proposed to incorporate the consumer’s perspective into creating value in the fashion industry, seeking to pave the way to more circularity-oriented business models in the textile/fashion industry.

The bioeconomy is considered one of the three main sectors with the greatest opportunities for the development of the circular economy in Brazil, who is one of the largest silk producers in the world; and sericulture is an agribusiness that contributes greatly to the bioeconomy in Brazil. Therefore, this research aimed to identify opportunities for creating value by internalizing flows in the production of silk cocoons by promoting a circular bioeconomy. To that end, a tool was used to assess the circularity of the referred system. The current circularity of the production of silk cocoons, at the farm level, is 74.19 % for material, and 0 % for energy. A range of measures are proposed, based on (i) engaging with reverse logistics practices, (ii) establishing a local agroindustrial cooperative, and (iii) building community biodigesters, which aid a potential circularity of 85.51 % (material), and 100 % (energy) at the farm level, and 98.42 % (material) and 100 % (energy), at the cooperative level. On top of increasing circular value, the proposed measures might bring environmental benefits, such as lessening environmental impacts of logistics (by valuing local resources) and replacing non-renewable energy, and social impacts, through increased quality of life for sericulturists. Economic implications need further investigation and are suggested to be addressed in future research endeavors, along with policy implications for the development of a circular bioeconomy. Furthermore, an increased circularity can also contribute to a few of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations, such as SDGs 2, 7, 9, 11, 12 and 13.

Bioenergy is a renewable energy obtained from biomass, and its main benefits are the reduction of greenhouse gases and waste disposal. One way to generate bioenergy is through anaerobic digesters. However, a common problem found in feasibility analyses is the appropriate location for these biodigesters, since the biomass is geographically and spatially dispersed. When the location is poorly chosen, it can interfere with the viability of the project. Therefore, the objective of this research is to determine the existence of areas that could still be explored by investigating studies that seek to identify suitable locations for deploying the biodigesters from the perspective of aspects (economic, environmental and social), localization problems (location/allocation and supply chain) and techniques. To this end, a systematic review of the literature was conducted from the Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science databases. It was observed that the literature could be more explored to (a) consider the social aspect in biodigesters location models, (b) propose studies that specify and consolidate each aspects’ characteristics found in the literature applied in biodigesters location models, (c) integrate the economic–environmental–social aspects into supply chain project problems, and (d) explore the creation of clusters for energy production through strategic partnerships between small farms.

The aim of this paper is twofold: (i) to build a model by combining an agglomerative hierarchical algorithm with multicriteria analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) in order to identify whether there are opportunities to create strategic partnerships based on geographic coordinates of raw material suppliers and the volume of raw material supply; and (ii) to apply the model in a case study in order to identify suitable locations for building a biodigester, thus establishing strategic partnerships and circular economy-based practices. The model involves four stages: (1) defining the study site, (2) building the set of cluster solutions, (3) defining the suitable locations for building a biodigester, and (4) conducting analyses of feasibility of strategic partnership and sensitivity. The model was applied in a small region and it was analyzed the possibility of creating two or three clusters. The use of the model allowed, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, to preliminarily identify the possibility of creating a strategic partnership, and also determine the location of a biodigester. The case study applied in southern Brazil took place in a region with high potential for generating biogas from agro-waste. A geographic map with roads, rivers, and constraints was built. Strategic partnerships, sensitivity analysis, and circular economy-based practices were discussed. The results of this work could provide useful information when using the model for other regions, and the model could easily incorporate further criteria and conditions, making it flexible and tailored to users' needs.

The aim of this article is to identify both the circular economy strategies with the most influence for managing each business model building block in circular businesses; and the business model building blocks that are most affected by circular economy strategies. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify potential circular economy strategies, resulting in sixteen such strategies. Thereafter, a survey was conducted with experts to indicate how important the strategies were for managing each building block (business model Canvas) using a Fuzzy Logic approach. The survey, using fuzzy linguistic variables, was sent to specialists in circular business models worldwide. The circular economy strategies that influence business modelling to a greater extent are developing strategic partnerships for circularity and engaging stakeholders along the value chain, and digital technologies (e.g. Industry 4.0) to enable circularity. The building blocks most influenced by circular economy strategies are customer segments, customer relationships, and key partnerships. The analysis made in this research indicates where companies should focus their efforts towards managing their businesses when implementing/managing different CE strategies.

The purpose of this document is to carry out a critical review of the existing literature by specifically addressing the following: (i) the integration of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost assessment from the perspective of research topics, category and scope of study, authors, institutions, countries, and journals working on or publishing related studies, and (ii) the main aids, challenges, opportunities, methodological difficulties, and current research efforts on the integrated approach of both tools. A systematic review was conducted to identify studies with an integrated use of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost in several areas. An analysis of the main aspects of the studies identified, such as bibliographic reference, year of publication, institution where the research was conducted, country, area of application, category of study, journal of publication, impact factor, and number of citations was conducted. After a search in the Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, 349 documents were identified. After a series of filters (excluding gray literature, reading titles and keywords, reading abstracts, and reading full-texts), which helped ruling out articles that did not contribute to investigating the integration of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost assessment, 90 documents were selected for a detailed analysis. The leading role of the USA and European countries in this issue should be highlighted. The integration of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost seems to be most advanced in the areas of building design and civil construction. Different strategies for the integration of the methodologies are also found, being mathematical modelling and programming for optimization, and multi-criteria decision-making the most recurrent methods. Moreover, there seems to be more challenges than opportunities in said integration. The challenges include the monetization of environmental impacts, higher volatility of economic data compared to environmental data, and differences in environmental and economic background data. These challenges can be turned into opportunities in the development of more comprehensive methodological approaches. Challenges (e.g., time-, resource- and knowledge-intensive, different scopes) and opportunities (e.g., common system boundaries, benefitting from LCA structure to conduct LCC) for the integration of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost were identified. This combined approach allows projects, products, and services to reduce environmental and economic impacts, which can be quantified and compared through improved assessment of potential trade-offs.

Circular economy can play an important role towards sustainable business management and it can be seen all throughout an organization. Although the current literature regards the circular economy as a guide for more sustainable business models, it is not clear the main implications to key business areas. Therefore this study aimed to present the key impacts of circular economy practices within different business areas that help guide a sustainable management of businesses. To that end, it was identified, by means of a systematic review of the existing literature, the business areas impacted by circular economy practices within an organization. The business areas identified were strategic planning, cost management, supply chain management, quality management, environmental management, process management, logistics and reverse logistics, service management, and research and development, allowing a discussion on the main contributions of the circular economy to each area. A key-impact map was provided summarizing the most influential changes in each area that assist in the management of businesses towards greater sustainability. It is important that organizations understand and accurately internalize circularity principles within their strategic plan. On that note, adopting a circular thinking might enable an organization to obtain more sustainable (economic) results while reducing impacts.

Integrating environmental commitment to manufacturing concerns seems unavoidable towards a more sustainable conduct. In the contemporary scenario, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) has been bringing new perspectives into companies' economics, improving production performance, whereas Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been the most complete tool for environmental assessment. Therefore, the present study aims to propose a model based on the integration of LCA and VSM to improve environmental and manufacturing aspects of organizations, the LCA-VSM model. Possible spots for integration, overlaps between LCA and VSM and potential gains were identified. The LCA-VSM model provides a simple tool for prioritizing action measures to improve the environmental-economic performance, and unlike many existing methods, it encourages continuous improvement instead of a one-off approach. The company where a case study was conducted to test the LCA-VSM model is a manufacturer of tools and painting materials for the civil construction sector. The use of the proposed model guided actions that decreased from 5% to 15% of environmental impacts (across nine impact categories), and reduced both non-value adding (lead time went from 103.26 to 24.01 days) and value adding (cycle time went from 35.7 s to 33.75 s) time. The main contribution of this paper is providing a structured approach to a practical integration of LCA and VSM towards decision making, prioritizing action measures based on the following criteria: environmental preference, economic feasibility, and ease of implementation, aiding more eco-efficient practices.

The purpose of this study was to validate the construct and reliability of an instrument to assess the work environment as a single tool based on quality of life (QL), quality of work life (QWL), and organizational climate (OC). The methodology tested the construct validity through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and reliability through Cronbach’s alpha. The EFA returned a Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) value of 0.917; which demonstrated that the data were adequate for the factor analysis; and a significant Bartlett’s test of sphericity (χ2 = 7465.349; Df = 1225; p ≤ 0.000). After the EFA; the varimax rotation method was employed for a factor through commonality analysis; reducing the 14 initial factors to 10. Only question 30 presented commonality lower than 0.5; and the other questions returned values higher than 0.5 in the commonality analysis. Regarding the reliability of the instrument; all of the questions presented reliability as the values varied between 0.953 and 0.956. Thus; the instrument demonstrated construct validity and reliability

The circular bioeconomy represents an opportunity of nearly USD $8 trillion until 2030. However, innovative business models are needed for a circular bioeconomy to succeed. What mostly lacks in the body of research on business models for the circular bioeconomy, and what marks the originality of the present article, is summarizing the key aspects that need to be considered when designing, implementing and managing businesses in a circular bioeconomy. Therefore, this study’s aim is twofold (i) to reveal key aspects for implementing and managing business models for a circular bioeconomy; and (ii) to point out the issues that lack further research on the theme, based on the existing literature. A systematic literature review was conducted on the Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Key aspects for implementing and managing business models were identified according to the business model Canvas framework. Key aspects are related to the role of innovation and new markets, taking the customer perspective into account in the value creation process and being close to customers, adequate management of logistics and feedstock collection systems, being aware of different routes for valuing biomass, seeking technological development, building resilient value chains, and focusing on value creation to cover costs. Issues that need addressing in the existing literature include product-service-systems, take back-systems, seasonal availability of resources, social impacts, rebound effects, and aquatic activities.

The proposed model can be used mainly by researchers and public organizations that intend to or are currently conducting SR initiatives. It can be used to assess and compare SR standards, being a facilitator to KTT processes. GRI, a worldwide well‐known SR standard was assessed using the SURKaTT Model, and results show that GRI performed at only 58.8% of its potential to facilitate KTT processes. This pioneering approach can encourage researchers onto developing further criteria to assess the possibilities of KTT in SR, and it is a kick‐off start for SR to be considered a both purposeful and serendipitous source of KTT initiatives.

Agriculture is one of the sectors that strongly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions on the planet. In this sense, circular economy practices can be advantageous when using bioenergy in the agro-industrial sector. Although only about 9% of the world's economy is circular, global initiatives have acted to change that scenario. Unlike the linear economy (take-make-use-dispose), the circular economy (grow-make-use-restore) aims to influence material and energy flows to increase environmental gains and avoid costs. Based on that, this study aims to map bioenergy boosters through circular economy practices in agriculture. To that end, a systematic literature review was conducted to present what is being developed in this field. To identify the most relevant, high impact, studies in the area, the systematic literature review was performed in three databases, covering all available literature up to date. The main research themes, applications, research topics, area of activity, countries, journals, publisher, and history of publication were identified. Therewith, some trends and perspectives could be drawn. To date, no solidly established authors have been identified in the area. The theme is recent and the vast majority of documents have been published over the last four years. European countries have been pioneering and are the most prominent in terms of publications. The electricity generation and biofuel produced from biogas have shown representativeness and are sustainable opportunities to advance the theme. Therefore, this study can contribute to encouraging the agricultural sector in implementing or increasing the use of circular economy practices.

This research aims to analyze and compare the selection of relevant papers by two bibliometric methods, namely, the Knowledge Development Process-Constructivist (Proknow-C) and the Methodi Ordinatio, which were also discussed in terms of common steps, limitations and underlying assumptions. Particularly, the topic of knowledge management in small and medium-sized enterprises was chosen in order to illustrate the application of these two methods that support systematic reviews. Besides descriptive indexes such as citations and journal impact, co-citation analysis was employed to examine selected papers. The results showed that both methods possess a high agreement rate in terms of selecting recent articles, but a low agreement rate regarding relevant/seminal articles, besides revealing a strong bias of the Methodi Ordinatio towards recent articles when the alpha constant is 10. Particularly, recent papers (up to two years of publication) represent about 80 % of top-50 InOrdinatio ranked articles. The co-citation analysis of the 46 selected articles (29 recent; 17 relevant) corroborated the methods capacity to select relevant articles. Finally, further bibliometric reviews in other topics may benefit from the common steps, limitations and underlying assumptions discussed in this research for selecting and analyzing relevant papers.

Brazilian silk production is amongst the five largest in the world. Nonetheless, there is no life cycle assessment study on silk cocoon production and its upstream processes, pertaining to the mulberry production (fundamental upstream process for silk production), in the existing literature. The objective of this study was to identify opportunities to improve the environmental profile of mulberry and silk cocoon production under Brazilian conditions. To that end, a life cycle assessment was conducted for the core processes of mulberry and silk cocoon production and upstream processes of raw material production, using the ReCiPe method for life cycle impact assessment using nine impact categories. Overall, the mulberry production showed greater impacts than the cocoon production for the impact categories analyzed. A few opportunities for improving the environmental profile of mulberry and silk cocoon production under Brazilian conditions included replacing the Kraft paper used to cover the rearing beds, replacing the standard tractor used to fetch mulberry leaves, replacing light bulbs, conducting a more sustainable mulberry and cocoon production, and setting a reverse logistics system for plastic and paper packaging waste. Nevertheless, many of these measures are long-term strategies. Besides, many of them need further economic feasibility assessment.
