With the rapid growth of electric vehicle (EV) ownership, attentions have been paid to the foundation of EVs, the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Different approaches of effort, among which battery swapping and fast charging are the two most well studied, have been made to solve the tradeoff problem between the battery charging speed and battery lifetime. There has been considerable debate over development strategy between charging and battery swapping. In passenger vehicles, the EV charging mode seems to dominate. But, does it mean that the battery swap mode is a dead-end? The answer should be “No”. There are use cases showing that battery swap can have great potentials for some particular uses, such as taxis and buses. This paper uses Monte Carlo simulations of vehicle behaviors to compare the service capacities and earnings of EV charging and battery swapping for both taxi and bus fleets. Stochastic models of taxis, buses, charging stations (CSs) and battery swapping systems are set up. Subsequently, service capacities of the EVSE are compared. The impact of factors on the service capacity, such as the size of the vehicle's battery, vehicle's moving speed, the power of the CS, and the price of the swapping service is investigated. Finally, possible reasons of today's less prevalence of battery swapping stations are discussed. The results of the analysis, which can be helpful to policymakers and industry investors, show that with same service capacity, an EV battery swapping station could provide significantly more financial and social benefits for the vehicle operators and EVSE service providers than that of an EV CS.

Some of the modern smart grid infrastructures, phasor measurement units (PMUs) for instance, are vulnerable to cyberattacks due to their ever-increasing dependence on information and communications technologies. In general, existing solutions to cyberattacks focus on creating redundancy and/or enhancing security levels of sensing and communication networks. These solutions require intensive offline efforts and therefore are economically expensive. Further, they are generally inefficient when dealing with dynamic attacks. This paper proposes a novel density-based spatial clustering approach for online detection, classification, and data recovery for data manipulation attacks to PMU measurements. The proposed method is purely data-driven and is applicable to simultaneous multi-measurement attacks without requiring additional hardware in the existing infrastructure. The proposed approach is also independent of the conventional state estimation. Comprehensive case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Ensuring the stability of power systems is gaining more attention today than ever before due to the rapid growth of uncertainties in load and increased renewable energy penetration. Lately, wide-area measurement system (WAMS)-based centralized controlling techniques are offering flexibility and more robust control to keep the system stable. WAMS-based controlling techniques, however, face pressing challenges of irregular delays in long-distance communication channels and subsequent responses of equipment to control actions. This paper presents an innovative control strategy for damping down low-frequency oscillations in transmission systems. The method uses a reinforcement learning technique to overcome the challenges of communication delays and other non-linearity in wide-area damping control. It models the traditional problem of oscillation damping control as a novel faster exploration-based deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG-S). An effective reward function is designed to capture necessary features of oscillations enabling timely damping of such oscillations, even under various kinds of uncertainties. A detailed analysis and a systematically designed numerical validation are presented to prove feasibility, scalability, interpretability, and comparative performance of the modelled low-frequency oscillation damping controller. The benefit of the technique is that stability is ensured even when uncertainties of load and generation are on the rise.

The problem of stochastic deadline scheduling is considered. A constrained Markov decision process model is introduced in which jobs arrive randomly at a service center with stochastic job sizes, rewards, and completion deadlines. The service provider faces random processing costs, convex noncompletion penalties, and a capacity constraint that limits the simultaneous processing of jobs. Formulated as a restless multiarmed bandit problem, the stochastic deadline scheduling problem is shown to be indexable. A closed-form expression of the Whittle's index is obtained for the case when the processing costs are constant. An upper bound on the gap-to-optimality for the Whittle's index policy is obtained, and it is shown that the bound converges to zero as the job arrival rate and the number of available processors increase simultaneously to infinity.

One critical value microgrids brings to power systems is resilience, the capability of being able to island from the main grid under certain conditions and connect back when necessary. Once islanded, a microgrid must be synchronized to the main grid before reconnection to prevent severe consequences. In general, synchronization of a single machine with the grid can be easily achieved using a synchronizer. The problem becomes more challenging when it comes to a multi-bus microgrid with multiple distributed generators (DGs) and dispersed loads. All DGs need to be properly controlled in a coordinated way to achieve synchronization. This paper presents a novel bi-level distributed cooperative control framework for a multi-bus microgrid. In this framework, DGs work collaboratively in a distributed manner using minimum and sparse communication. The topology of the communication network can be flexible which supports the plug-and-play feature of microgrids. Fast and deterministic synchronization can be achieved with tolerance to communication latency. Experimental results obtained from hardware-in-the-loop simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
