Information

I have always been interested in applying chemical techniques to solve environmental problems; it is a journey that has taken me from chemistry though archaeology, botany, geology and geography. My PhD investigated the response of oak trees to environmental changes (Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge). My main research focus has been upon achieving a better understanding of natural climatic variability using stable isotopes in tree-rings. In recent years, I have investigated the use of biochars to reduce environmental pollution from abandoned metal mines, and to remove NMPs from the aquatic environments. I am a Chartered Chemist (CChem FRSC), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and was the President of the Tree-ring Society (2018-2021). I am the (co-)author of over 100 scientific papers. I was awarded the prestigious Agnese Haury Training Fellowship at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona (USA) and I am currently a Visiting Professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (Poland).
