Chain mail structures, known for flexibility and adaptability, hold increasing promise for architectural applications, including transportable and reconfigurable systems. However, there is a dearth of knowledge on both systematic methods to design them, and complex behaviours of interlocking modules that comprise the structure. Preliminary studies, in response to this research gap, demonstrate the chain mail’s structural potential as programmable architecture. Nevertheless, to validate our models, we must move from the small scale to recognisably viable structures at an architectural scale.Acknowledging the multiscale prototype’s significance for developing new architectural systems, this study scales up chain mail structures from a small 1:10 scale to larger 1:2 and 1:1 scales. Employing a Research-Through-Design approach, we systematically addressed the challenges, focusing on module fabrication and prototype construction through analogue computation. Fabrication adjustments involve changing materials and modifying designs to suit manufacturing techniques. Additional design elements and process steps are needed to facilitate programming the larger scale structures due to the increased weight during construction. The research culminated in a full-scale saddle-like structure, illustrating the feasibility of direct scaling from smaller to larger scales and the expansive architectural potential of chain mail structures. In conclusion, the study successfully identified and responded to specific challenges related to the fabrication and construction of upscaled chain mail prototypes, aligning solutions with practical contexts. In doing so, this research contributes a set of considerations to enable more systematic design approaches for chain mail structural systems in architecture. At the same time, scaling up uncovers the inherent intelligence of these structures, providing a foundation for both empirical testing through analogue experimentation, and developing a predictive framework for their development and application in the field.

Bamboo has been used for a long time as a material for simple to complex structures. Many advantages of bamboo as a building material makes it suitable for buildings in disaster-prone areas. Bamboo is however prone to humidity, which could cause fungi and moss to emerge and endanger the building structure. Pedestal foundation made of concrete or stone is often used to reduce this risk as for its action as a barrier of direct contact between soil and bamboo. Nevertheless, water from damp soil or rainwater can still penetrate the foundation by capillary transmission through the foundation’s pores. This research proposed a hollow pedestal foundation model with larger pores and compared its ability to reduce moisture on bamboo columns to an ordinary pedestal foundation. The case study is a temporary post-disaster housing project of 13 houses in Muntilan, Central Java, Indonesia, which was built on an active rice field. Visual examination showed that after 5 years of occupancy, bamboo houses built on hollow pedestal foundations still firmly stood without apparent attacks of fungi or overgrowing mold, whereas the moisture measurement showed that the usage of hollow pedestal foundation could reduce the humidity level in the bamboo column almost twice as fast compared to solid pedestal foundation.

Bebak, the local building material of East Nusa Tenggara, has long been used as the primary building material, especially as wall material. However, bebak wall construction commonly used today is not yet ideal in terms of its material protection and function. Bebak is a relatively quick damage construction due to termites, which eventually causes the enclosed space's thermal conditions less comfortable. This research is part of the quality improvement program of healthy housing in that region, which focuses on bebak wall protection by plastering the wall with concrete plaster. Two scale models were examined; a wall plastered only on one side, and a wall plastered on both sides. By using a simple construction approach, the research aims to evaluate the bebak protection technique's effects on the construction stability and the bond strength between the bebak composite wall materials. The results of visual evaluations revealed that single-sided plaster on bebak walls could maintain the construction stability and the bond strength of the composite material better than the double-sided one. Furthermore, the evaluation also reveals additional benefits of the plastered walls for the users, such as adaptability and simplicity of modular wall replication to build affordable healthy housing.

Sliding Sudare has a big potential to be developed considered its high effectiveness in minimizing building energy consumption while still maintaining its visibility quality. Meanwhile, its original blinds that is made of bamboo cannot withstand extreme weather and have a short lifespan. Therefore, this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the other material alternatives namely stainless steel, plastic, and natural fiber. A scaled model is used for prototyping the materials in the shape of bicycle spokes, PLA+ (3D printer filament), and bamboo slats as the blinds. These everyday objects were tested in terms of their physical characteristic and were measured by four parameters (security requirement, weather resistance, construction process, and cost-effectiveness). From the research, it was concluded that bicycle spokes has the highest overall performance with the highest advantages in weather resistance requirement, cost-effectiveness, and construction; whilst PLA+ and bamboo slats have the least overall performance though both have high advantage in terms of security requirement.
