With an overwhelming increase in the demand of autonomous systems, especially in the applications related to intelligent robotics and visual surveillance, come stringent accuracy requirements for complex object recognition. A system that maintains its performance against a change in the object’s nature is said to be sustainable and it has become a major area of research for the computer vision research community in the past few years. In this work, we present a sustainable deep learning architecture, which utilizes multi-layer deep features fusion and selection, for accurate object classification. The proposed approach comprises three steps: (1) By utilizing two deep learning architectures, Very Deep Convolutional Networks for Large-Scale Image Recognition and Inception V3, it extracts features based on transfer learning, (2) Fusion of all the extracted feature vectors is performed by means of a parallel maximum covariance approach, and (3) The best features are selected using Multi Logistic Regression controlled Entropy-Variances method. For verification of the robust selected features, the Ensemble Learning method named Subspace Discriminant Analysis is utilized as a fitness function. The experimental process is conducted using four publicly available datasets, including Caltech-101, Birds database, Butterflies database and CIFAR-100, and a ten-fold validation process which yields the best accuracies of 95.5%, 100%, 98%, and 68.80% for the datasets respectively. Based on the detailed statistical analysis and comparison with the existing methods, the proposed selection method gives significantly more accuracy. Moreover, the computational time of the proposed selection method is better for real-time implementation.

In the era of industry 4.0, safety, efficiency and reliability of industrial machinery is an elementary concern in trade sectors. The accurate remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of an equipment in due time allows us to effectively plan the maintenance operation and mitigate the downtime to raise the revenue of business. In the past decade, data driven based RUL prognostic methods had gained a lot of interest among the researchers. There exist various deep learning-based techniques which have been used for accurate RUL estimation. One of the widely used technique in this regard is the long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. To further improve the prediction accuracy of LSTM networks, this paper proposes a model in which effective pre-processing steps are combined with LSTM network. C-MAPSS turbofan engine degradation dataset released by NASA is used to validate the performance of the proposed model. One important factor in RUL predictions is to determine the starting point of the engine degradation. This work proposes an improved piecewise linear degradation model to determine the starting point of deterioration and assign the RUL target labels. The sensors data is pre-processed using the correlation analysis to choose only those sensors measurement which have a monotonous behavior with RUL, which is then filtered through a moving median filter. The updated RUL labels from the degradation model together with the pre-processed data are used to train a deep LSTM network. The deep neural network when combined with dimensionality reduction and piece-wise linear RUL function algorithms achieves improved performance on aircraft turbofan engine sensor dataset. We have tested our proposed model on all four sub-datasets in C-MAPSS and the results are then compared with the existing methods which utilizes the same dataset in their experimental work. It is concluded that our model yields improvement in RUL prediction and attains minimum root mean squared error and score function values.

Pakistan’s economy is largely driven by agriculture, and wheat, mostly, stands out as its second most produced crop every year. On the other hand, the average consumption of wheat is steadily increasing as well, due to which its exports are not proportionally growing, thereby, threatening the country’s economy in the years to come. This work focuses on developing an accurate wheat production forecasting model using the Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks, which are considered to be highly accurate for time series prediction. A data pre-processing smoothing mechanism, in conjunction with the LSTM based model, is used to further improve the prediction accuracy. A comparison of the proposed mechanism with a few existing models in literature is also given. The results verify that the proposed model achieves better performance in terms of forecasting, and reveal that while the wheat production will gradually increase in the next ten years, the production to consumption ratio will continue to fall and pose threats to the overall economy. Our proposed framework, therefore, may be used as guidelines for wheat production in particular, and is amenable to other crops as well, leading to sustainable agriculture development in general.

Smart agriculture or precision farming is a rapidly evolving multidisciplinary field encompassing knowledge from agriculture, technology, data science, and environmental science to name a few. Amidst the large number of recent research publications related to smart agriculture and intelligent farming practices, a need arises to summarize their findings in a single consolidated review article. This work endeavors to summarize recent key technologies and applications of smart agriculture, delineate the prevalent challenges it faces, highlight its publicly available datasets for adoption, and offer some policy guidelines for stakeholders, assisting them in making informed decisions regarding technology adoption and investment. We conclude that smart agriculture can potentially revolutionize the agricultural sector, provided we overcome the challenges by ensuring effective collaboration among stakeholders, a strong infrastructure, digital literacy, adoption incentives, data privacy, interoperability, favorable policy frameworks, and continuous research and development.

In disaster situations, collapse of local communication infrastructure is a major issue due to destruction of buildings, antennas, power sources, and to name a few. Drones, as flying base stations, are a promising solution to restore essential communication services in emergency situations. The contribution of this article is twofold: First, an efficient computer vision technique is proposed to identify areas with high density of low mobility or stationary users. This is done using a multistep process, which includes image acquisition, classification, and crowd density estimation. Next, an accurate mathematical model is presented for joint optimization of drone base stations placement and user assignment. The goal here is to maximize the number of serviced users with minimum number of drones, while satisfying practical network constraints. An optimal solution to such a biobjective optimization problem has complexity exponential to the network size. Furthermore, a low complexity heuristic is proposed to solve the optimization problem. Complexity analysis of the proposed solution is then carried out. Simulation results for a number of practical network scenarios demonstrate that the proposed solution achieves a performance comparable to the optimal solution.

Melanoma is considered to be one of the deadliest skin cancer types, whose occurring frequency elevated in the last few years; its earlier diagnosis, however, significantly increases the chances of patients’ survival. In the quest for the same, a few computer based methods, capable of diagnosing the skin lesion at initial stages, have been recently proposed. Despite some success, however, margin exists, due to which the machine learning community still considers this an outstanding research challenge. In this work, we come up with a novel framework for skin lesion classification, which integrates deep features information to generate most discriminant feature vector, with an advantage of preserving the original feature space. We utilize recent deep models for feature extraction, and by taking advantage of transfer learning. Initially, the dermoscopic images are segmented, and the lesion region is extracted, which is later subjected to retrain the selected deep models to generate fused feature vectors. In the second phase, a framework for most discriminant feature selection and dimensionality reduction is proposed, entropy-controlled neighborhood component analysis (ECNCA). This hierarchical framework optimizes fused features by selecting the principle components and extricating the redundant and irrelevant data. The effectiveness of our design is validated on four benchmark dermoscopic datasets; PH2, ISIC MSK, ISIC UDA, and ISBI-2017. To authenticate the proposed method, a fair comparison with the existing techniques is also provided. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed design is accurate enough to categorize the skin lesion with 98.8%, 99.2% and 97.1% and 95.9% accuracy with the selected classifiers on all four datasets, and by utilizing less than 3% features.
