Biography

Yoana Kiselova-Kaneva studied biology at Plovdiv University and obtained a master’s degree in genetics and cell biology in 1999. She worked at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2000-2004), Institute of Genetics, and obtained her PhD degree in biochemistry (2011), from the Medical University, Varna. Her PhD thesis was in the field of medicinal plant research, oxidative stress, and inflammation. From 2013: associate professor; from 2016: Head of Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine and Nutrigenomics with Laboratory of Nutrigenomics, Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, Medical University, Varna; currently: leader of the research section “Nutrition and Quality of Life” in the Research Institute, Medical University, Varna, and of the research group “Nutrigenomics and Personalized Nutrition” within the research direction “Nutrition and Quality of Life” at the same institute. She studies the effects of natural products, diets, and eating habits on selected biochemical and molecular markers. She applies in vitro and in vivo methods of analysis of natural products for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antidiabetic activity, and carries out qualitative and quantitative analyses of biological substances and cytotoxicity assays to explore molecular mechanisms of biological activity in in vitro experiments, including cell cultures, and in vivo on experimental animals and in interventional human studies.
