The increased consumption of livestock, poultry, and fish products in people's diet threatens to drive production toward the use of more and more conventional crops in animal feeds. In this context, alleviating the tightening grain crop supply and ensuring the healthy development of animal husbandry through innovations in protein feedstuff production remain considerable challenges. Moringa oleifera is a miracle tree species with abundant nutrients, high protein biological value, and good feeding effect. As a new protein feedstuff, M. oleifera has great potential in alleviating the feeding crisis. Here, we review available literature regarding the characterization of M. oleifera in the field of animal husbandry in terms of nutrient content, digestion, and absorption characteristics, and feeding effects and present current challenges in using M. oleifera as animal feed.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of wilting and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) addition on the silage fermentation quality and microbial community of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaf silage. Unwilted (direct-cut) or wilted M. oleifera leaves were prepared either with or without LP (1.0 × 106 cfu/g) followed by either 60 or 120 days of ensiling, leading to eight treatment groups. The results showed that lactic acid was the dominant fermentation product, and no butyric acid was detected for any of the treatments. Higher acetic acid and propionic acid were detected during the fermentation of wilted silage compared to unwilted silage. Although NH3-N content increased after wilting, the content was far below 10% of the dry matter (DM). In addition, higher pH was observed after 120 days of ensiling compared to 60 days. Wilting also influenced the bacterial community structure. Lactobacillus was the most dominant genus in unwilted samples while Enterobacteriales, Weissella, and Pantoea were the most dominant genera in wilted samples. Furthermore, the relative abundance of undesirable microorganisms was far below that of lactic acid bacteria in all treatments. In summary, wilting had significant effects on fermentation quality, and it was shown that M. oleifera leaves can undergo quality ensiling directly without the addition of LP.

With the lack of feed resources in China, mulberry leaves have been developed as a ruminant forage rich in protein and functional components. To make full use of mulberry leaves, including their nutrients and biological activities, we investigated the effects of cellulase and Lactobacillus casei LC on the nutritive value and antioxidant capacity of mulberry leaf silage. Mulberry leaves from 2 locally prevailing high-yield cultivars were separately subjected to ensiling treatments either with or without addition of Lactobacillus culture, in combination with variable levels of cellulase application. After 60-d ensiling, the resulting silage was sampled and analyzed for fermentation parameters, antioxidant activity, carbohydrates, and protein fractions, as well as in vitro rumen gas production. The results showed that nutrients, including functional components of mulberry leaves, were well preserved during the ensiling process. Compared with the control, the application of cellulase and Lactobacillus casei LC resulted in greater dry matter recovery, higher contents of lactic acid, true protein, and total flavonoid, and increased antioxidant activity and microbial protein production, as well as decreased pH value, lower concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, and lower fiber fractions in the mulberry leaf silage, which varied between the 2 selected mulberry cultivars. These results suggest that mulberry leaf silage could be a quality feed with robust antioxidant capacity, which could be improved by the application of cellulase and Lactobacillus casei LC.
