This paper proposes an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) architecture for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) position servo system. The presented method achieved enhanced tracking and disturbance rejection performance with a limited observer bandwidth. The model-aided extended state observer (MESO)-based ADRC was designed for the current, speed, and position loops of the PMSM position servo system. By integrating known plant information, the MESO improved disturbance estimation with a limited observer bandwidth without amplifying the noise. Additionally, a fractional-order proportional-derivative (FOPD) controller was designed as the feedback controller for the speed loop to further enhance the disturbance rejection. A simulation and experimental tests were conducted on a PMSM servo platform. The results demonstrate not only that the proposed method achieved superior tracking performance but also that the position error of the proposed strategy decreases to 2.25% when the constant disturbance was input, significantly improving the disturbance rejection performance.

Trajectory optimization (TO) combined with whole-body control (WBC) have been a widely accepted approach for dynamic gait control of quadruped robots. However, there are still open issues in this framework, one is the lack of a unified description of intrinsic inter-limb coordination for wide range of gaits and their transitions in TO, another is motion compliance against disturbances arisen from transitions while maintaining accurate tracking performance. In this letter, we introduce the reduced antero-posterior sequence (APS) gait parametrization approach into the model predictive control (MPC) based TO. The APS gait parametrization, which is enforced as equality constraints in optimization model, enables the representation of diverse gaits, symmetrical and asymmetrical, with five parameters and offers an intuitive way to efficiently implement gait transitions with linear interpolation of gait parameters. We also construct a whole-body impedance controller that integrates the operational impedance controller into WBC, allowing to compliantly track the optimized torso state trajectories and contact forces. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified in simulations and experiments. The results indicate that the test robot is able to robustly locomote with various gaits, including diagonal walk, trot, bound, flying trot and traverse gallop at a variety of speeds, and smoothly implement gait transitions among these gaits. Compared to existing gait transition approach, ours can obtain better reference tracking performance and higher energy efficiency during gait transitions.

Impedance control is an important method in robot–environment interaction. In traditional impedance control, the damping force is regarded as a linear viscoelastic model, which limits the description of the dynamic model of the impedance system to a certain extent. For the robot manipulator, the optimal impedance parameters of the impedance controller are the key to improve the performance. In this paper, the damping force is described more accurately by fractional calculus than the traditional viscoelastic model, and a fractional-order impedance controller for the robot manipulator is proposed. A practical and systematic tuning procedure based on the frequency design method is developed for the proposed fractional-order impedance controller. The fairness of comparison between the fractional-order impedance controller and the integer-order impedance controller is addressed under the same specifications. Fair comparisons of the two controllers via the simulation and experiment tests show that, in the step response, the fractional-order impedance controller has a better integral time square error (ITSE) result, smaller overshoot and less settling time than the integer-order impedance controller. In terms of anti-disturbance, the fractional-order impedance controller can achieve stability with less recovering time and better ITSE index than integer order impedance controller.

A novel fractional-order model, incorporating coupled hysteresis and creep effects, is proposed for typical piezoelectric actuators in this study. Throughout the actuation process, various nonlinear behaviors such as piezoelectric hysteresis, non-local memory, peak transition, and creep nonlinearity are accurately characterized by the model. Offering a simpler structure and superior tracking performance compared to conventional models, the proposed fractional-order model parameters are identified using a method that integrates actuator dynamics and employs the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Experimental validation on a piezoelectric actuation platform confirms the model’s superior accuracy and simplified structure, contributing to a deeper understanding of piezoelectric actuation mechanisms and providing an efficient modeling tool for enhanced system performance.

Recent technological progress is opening up practical applications for quadruped robots. In this context, comprehensive performance demands, including speed, payload, robustness, terrain adaptability, endurance, and techno-economics, are increasing. However, design conflicts inevitably exist among these performance indicators, highlighting design challenges, especially for a heavy-duty, electrically actuated quadruped robots, which are strongly constrained by motor torque density and battery energy density. Starting from task-specific holistic system thinking, in this paper, we present a novel task-oriented approach to the design of such kind of robots, incorporating hierarchical optimization and a control-in-the-loop design, while following a structured design path that effectively exploits the strengths of both heuristic and computational designs. Guided by these philosophies, we utilize heuristic design to obtain the approximate initial form of the prototype and propose a key task-oriented actuator joint configuration, utilizing commercially available components. Subsequently, we build a step-wise analytical models considering trajectory optimization and motor heat constraints for optimization of leg length and joint match parameters to achieve a compact performance requirement envelope and minimize redundancy in the construction of task-specific components. Furthermore, we construct a holistic simulation platform with a module control algorithm for typical scenarios to evaluate subsystem results and adjust design parameters iteratively, balancing conflicts and eventually achieving a reliable design specification for detailed subsystem design. Based on these strategies, we develop a heavy-duty electric prototype achieving a maximum speed of 2 m/s in trotting gait with a load weighting over 160 kg and enduring a period of 2 h. The experiment upon the prototype verifies the efficiency of the proposed approach.
