Dr Toby Waine, Reader in Applied Remote Sensing, is an agricultural engineer with a farming background. He completed his EngD in Non-invasive soil property measurement for precision farming at Cranfield University in 1999. His research focuses on the methodological underpinning and system understanding for future agro-ecological systems through the innovative use of remote sensing. This includes the challenges of image data integration with models, robustness and reliability of information, and system optimisation to provide valuable information to farmers, land managers and policy practitioners internationally. Extensive experience in illicit crop monitoring of opium poppy and cannabis in Afghanistan led him to focus on food security and commodity markets, including tracking and mapping wheat changes in North America and deforestation for cocoa and coffee sustainability. Currently, he is working on sugar beet, bioenergy crops, tea, and potato dormancy using imagery at different scales. He has acted as Scientific Expert for United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and is Science Adviser to the Société General funded Climate SHAKE program aimed at supporting entrepreneurs in bringing Agri-tech innovation to the marketplace.
