The main research topics are neuropathology focusing on neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration and neuroprotection, neurovirology/virology, especially zoonotic viruses, viral reservoirs and viral ecology, neuro-immune interactions, neuroprotection as well as tumor biology and wildlife research. This consists of the establishment validation of reliable in vitro methods (e.g. cell cultures, organotypic slice cultures...) as well as validation and suitability of animal models. I am especially interested in the health aspects regarding zoonotic reservoir-bound neurotropic viruses, their maintenance within the reservoir, transmission chains, different disease outcomes and pathogenesis in reservoirs and accidental end hosts and risk assessment aspects.
