Currently, people use online social media such as Twitter or Facebook to share their emotions and thoughts. Detecting and analyzing the emotions expressed in social media content benefits many applications in commerce, public health, social welfare, etc. Most previous work on sentiment and emotion analysis has only focused on single-label classification and ignored the co-existence of multiple emotion labels in one instance. This paper describes the development of a novel deep learning-based system that addresses the multiple emotion classification problem in Twitter. We propose a novel method to transform it to a binary classification problem and exploit a deep learning approach to solve the transformed problem. Our system outperforms the state-of-the-art systems, achieving an accuracy score of 0.59 on the challenging SemEval2018 Task 1:E-cmulti-label emotion classification problem.

Nowadays, most decision processes rely not only on the preferences of the decision maker but also on the public opinions about the possible alternatives. The user preferences have been heavily taken into account in the multi-criteria decision making field. On the other hand, sentiment analysis is the field of natural language processing devoted to the development of systems that are capable of analysing reviews to obtain their polarity. However, there have not been many works up to now that integrate the results of this process with the analysis of the alternatives in a decision support system. SentiRank is a novel system that takes into account both the preferences of the decision maker and the public online reviews about the alternatives to be ranked. A new mechanism to integrate both aspects into the ranking process is proposed in this paper. The sentiments of the reviews with respect to different aspects are added to the decision support system as a set of additional criteria, and the ELECTRE methodology is used to rank the alternatives. The system has been implemented and tested with a restaurant data set. The experimental results confirm the appeal of adding the sentiment information from the reviews to the ranking process.

Diagnosing some eye pathologies, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), depends on accurately detecting retinal eye lesions. Automatic lesion-segmentation methods based on deep learning involve heavy-weight models and have yet to produce the desired quality of results. This paper presents a new deep learning method for segmenting the four types of DR lesions found in eye fundus images. The method, called LezioSeg, is based on multi-scale modules and gated skip connections. It has three components: (1) Two multi-scale modules, the first is atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP), which is inserted at the neck of the network, while the second is added at the end of the decoder to improve the fundus image feature extraction; (2) ImageNet MobileNet encoder; and (3) gated skip connection (GSC) mechanism for improving the ability to obtain information about retinal eye lesions. Experiments using affine-based transformation techniques showed that this architecture improved the performance in lesion segmentation on the well-known IDRiD and E-ophtha datasets. Considering the AUPR standard metric, for the IDRiD dataset, we obtained 81% for soft exudates, 86% for hard exudates, 69% for hemorrhages, and 40% for microaneurysms. For the E-ophtha dataset, we achieved an AUPR of 63% for hard exudates and 37.5% for microaneurysms. These results show that our model with affine-based augmentation achieved competitive results compared to several cutting-edge techniques, but with a model with much fewer parameters.

Participative branding is a process by which DMOs, locals and visitors contribute, through their activity in social media, to the definition of the emotional values associated to a destination. From the communicative point of view it is particularly important that DMOs and local citizens work together in the transmission of a set of coherent values that compose a personalised identity. This paper presents a novel methodology, based on semantic similarity measures, that permits to make an automated analysis of the emotional values transmitted by official tourist offices and by local citizens through social media. A study of 54,000 tweets from 9 main European tourist destinations highlights the lack of a strategy towards the communication of a distinctive brand and a strong gap between the official view transmitted by the DMOs of the destinations and the one communicated by their residents.
