The Sanjiangyuan region of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot of alpine mammals but a barren area in terms of amphibians and reptiles. Here, we describe a new pit viper species, Gloydius rubromaculatus sp. n. Shi, Li and Liu, 2017 that was discovered in this region, with a brief taxonomic revision of the genus Gloydius . The new species can be distinguished from the other congeneric species by the following characteristics: cardinal crossbands on the back, indistinct canthus rostralis, glossy dorsal scales, colubrid-like oval head shape, irregular small black spots on the head scales, black eyes and high altitude distribution (3300-4770 m above sea level). The mitochondrial phylogenetic reconstruction supported the validity of the new species and furthermore reaffirms that G. intermedius changdaoensis , G. halys cognatus , G. h. caraganus and G. h. stejnegeri should be elevated as full species. Gloydius rubromaculatus sp. n. was found to be insectivorous: preying on moths (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Sideridis sp.) in the wild. This unusual diet may be one of the key factors to the survival of this species in such a harsh alpine environment.

Ecotourism is considered to be an effective means of promoting nature conservation and sustainable development in less developed regions. However, its widespread adoption may be the result of a misunderstanding due to confusion about definitions and interpretations. Using web map browsers, we assessed the distribution pattern of ecotourism sites in both number and density in the 31 provinces of mainland China, and found that it positively correlated with gross domestic products (GDP) and population size, showing spatial dynamics similar to the general tourism model. However, negative-weak or no correlation at all was found with the presence and size of nature variables such as protected areas. These results support previous suspicions that the term ecotourism and its associated concept may be misused in China and that the regions that could benefit the most from this form of tourism have yet to properly develop it. Although this pattern could reflect a huge demand for genuine ecotourism, we recommend that China, to achieve its ambitious sustainable development goals, adapt ecotourism policies in its environmental and socio-cultural context, manage them with a trans-disciplinary expert board, and regulate its market by introducing a rigorous admittance system with continuous monitoring and evaluation.

The elevational range where montane species live is a key factor of spatial niche partitioning, because the limits of such ranges are influenced by interspecies interaction, abiotic stress, and dispersal barriers. At the regional scale, unimodal distributions of single species along the elevation gradient have often been reported, while discontinuous patterns, such as bimodal distributions, and potential ecological implications have been rarely discussed. Here, we used extensive camera trap records to reveal the elevation distribution of Himalaya blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) and its co-existence with other ground animal communities along a slope of Baima Snow Mountain, southwest China. The results show that Himalaya blue sheep exhibited a distinctive bimodal distribution along the elevation gradient contrasting the unimodal distributions found for the other ungulates in Baima snow mountain. A first distributional peak was represented by a population habituating in scree habitat around 4100 m, and a second peak was found in the dry-hot valley around 2600 m. The two distinct populations co-existed with disparate animal communities and these assemblages were similar both in the dry and rainy seasons. The extremely low abundance of blue sheep observed in the densely forested belt at mid-elevation indicates that vegetation rather than temperature is responsible for such segregation. The low-elevation population relied highly on Opuntia ficus-indica, an invasive cactus species that colonized the region six hundred years ago, as food resource. Being the only animal that developed a strategy to feed on this spiky plant, we suggest invasive species may have formed new foraging niche to support blue sheep population in lower elevation hot-dry river valleys, resulting in the geographic separation from the original population and a potential morphological differentiation, as recorded. These findings emphasize the important conservation values of role of ecological functions to identify different taxa, and conservation values of apparent similar species of different ecological functions.

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a series of human lockdowns. Studying human–animal linkages during these periods is essential in conserving global biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem integrity, and preventing zoonotic diseases. This especially applies to the matters between human and nonhuman primates—their coexistence. In this study, we used community interviews and camera traps to analyze behavioral responses and changes in human–monkey relationships regarding a semi-wild group of macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) in a tourism area during the lockdown. The results indicate that food provision for macaques from tourists substantially declined. As a result, macaques moved to communities for food, causing increased human–monkey conflicts; consequently, local communities’ attitudes toward macaques prominently changed: those who have experienced severe conflicts are far less tolerant of the macaques than those without experience. Thus, to maintain a cordial coexistence between humans, primates, and other animals in ecotourism areas, we suggest (a) establishing long-term monitoring to maintain a sustainable balance between animal population size and available food resources provided by humans and the environment; (b) improving emergency management policies for controlling monkey populations to prevent the unwanted conflicts between macaques and communities, responding to exceptional circumstances such as the COVID-19 lockdown; (c) strengthening the establishment of conduct code for tourists to avoid conflicts between tourists and primates and the spread of pathogens; and (d) upgrading compensation policies for the damages caused by human–wildlife conflicts and strengthening the cooperation between the community and tourist management; an amicable relationship between communities, economic development, and animal conservation is highly demanded.

The mitochondrial genome may include crucial data for understanding phylogenetic and molecular evolution. We sequenced the complete mitogenome of Haemaphysalis nepalensis and Haemaphysalis yeni for the first time. H. nepalensis and H. yeni's complete mitogenomes were 14,720 and 14,895 bp in size, respectively, and both contained two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 13 protein-coding genes (PCG). Haemaphysalis nepalensis have one control region (D-loop). The adenine + thymine concentration of the genomes of H. nepalensis and H. yeni was 77.75 and 78.41%, respectively. The codon use pattern and amino acid content of proteins were both observed to be affected by the AT bias. Genes in the mitogenome were organized and located in a comparable manner to previously known genes from Haemaphysalis ticks. Mitochondrial PCGs were used to perform phylogenetic relationships based on the Minimum Evolution (ME) approach using MEGA 7.0 software, the results reveal that H. nepalensis has tight links with H. tibetensis, H. yeni and H. kolonini share a sister group relationship, and that H. nepalensis and H. yeni belong to Haemaphysalis. The results of this study include the following: (i) discovered and supplied new tick records (H. nepalensis) for China, (ii) provided the first complete mitochondrial genome for H. nepalensis and H. yeni and revealed their phylogenetic relationships, and (iii) the features of the mitochondrial genome of H. nepalensis and H. yeni provided more genetic reference for Phylogeography, systematics, and population genetics of the Haemaphysalis species.

Ixodes acutitarsus is regarded as the largest Ixodes tick around the world. I. acutitarsus is capable to transmit a wide range of animal and human pathogens. This research pioneered sequencing of the complete mitochondrial genome of I. acutitarsus. With a length of 14,475 bp, the complete mitochondrial genome encodes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and one replication-initiating region. The phylogenetic relationship was established using the Maximum-likelihood method to indicate that I. acutitarsus and the others of the genus Ixodes fit into the same branch, which confirms the inclusion of I. acutitarsus in the genus Ixodes. The complete mitogenome of sequenced I. acutitarsus provides molecular evidence for the taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of several Ixodes species.
