For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

In view of the future high power nuclear fusion experiments, the early identification of disruptions is a mandatory requirement, and presently the main goal is moving from the disruption mitigation to disruption avoidance and control. In this work, a deep-convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to provide early detection of disruptive events at JET. The CNN ability to learn relevant features, avoiding hand-engineered feature extraction, has been exploited to extract the spatiotemporal information from 1D plasma profiles. The model is trained with regularly terminated discharges and automatically selected disruptive phase of disruptions, coming from the recent ITER-like-wall experiments. The prediction performance is evaluated using a set of discharges representative of different operating scenarios, and an in-depth analysis is made to evaluate the performance evolution with respect to the considered experimental conditions. Finally, as real-time triggers and termination schemes are being developed at JET, the proposed model has been tested on a set of recent experiments dedicated to plasma termination for disruption avoidance and mitigation. The CNN model demonstrates very high performance, and the exploitation of 1D plasma profiles as model input allows us to understand the underlying physical phenomena behind the predictor decision.

Reliable algorithms for disruption avoidance and prediction are foreseen to play a fundamental role in the JET control system for the successful operation of the machine in the upcoming deuterium-tritium campaigns. The integration of such algorithms is expected to be a key part also in the implementation of the ITER plasma control system. So far, most of the effort has been devoted to the prediction of disruptions, which is required to mitigate the effects of these transient events, protecting the integrity of in-vessel components. Nevertheless, in order to put in place recover strategies or to have the possibility of a soft landing for the plasma current, the paradigm must be shifted to avoiding disruptions. In this paper, plasma profile-based indicators will be statistically analyzed showing their potential in such a perspective, where warning times and reliability of detection are crucial.

This paper reports an algorithm to automatically identify the chain of events leading to a disruption, evaluating the so-called reference warning time. This time separates the plasma current flat-top of each disrupted discharge into two parts: a non-disrupted part and a pre-disrupted one. The algorithm can be framed into the anomaly detection techniques as it aims to detect the off-normal behavior of the plasma. It is based on a statistical analysis of a set of dimensionless plasma parameters computed for a selection of discharges from the JET experimental campaigns. In every data-driven model, such as the generative topographic mapping (GTM) predictor proposed in this paper, it is indeed necessary to label the samples needed for training the model itself. The samples describing the disruption-free behavior are extracted from the plasma current flat-top phase of the regularly terminated discharges. The disrupted space is described by all the samples belonging to the pre-disruptive phase of each disruptive discharge in the training set. Note that a proper selection of the pre-disruptive phase plays a key role in the prediction performance of the model. Moreover, these models, which are highly dependent on the training input space, may be particularly prone to degradation as the operational space of any experimental machine is continuously evolving. Hence, a regular schedule of model review and retrain must be planned. The proposed algorithm avoids the cumbersome and time-consuming manual identification of the warning times, helping to implement a continuous learning system that could be automated, despite being offline. In this paper, the automatically evaluated warning times are compared with those obtained with a manual analysis in terms of the impact on the mapping of the JET input parameter space using the GTM methodology. Moreover, the algorithm has been used to build the GTM of recent experimental campaigns, with promising results.

In this paper, an original algorithm to solve multiobjective optimization problems, which makes use of the tabu search meta-heuristic, is presented. Scalarization of the vector problem is performed by introducing fitness functions that take under control both the Pareto optimality of the solutions, and the uniformity in the Pareto front sampling. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of a scalar tabu search method, coupled with the -constraint strategy. The results on analytical and electromagnetic problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
