Blood circulation depends critically on electrical activation, where any disturbance in the orderly pattern of the heart’s propagating wave of excitation can lead to arrhythmias. Diagnosis of arrhythmias using electrocardiograms (ECG) is widely used because they are a fast, inexpensive, and non-invasive tool. However, the randomness of arrhythmic events and the susceptibility of ECGs to noise leads to misdiagnosis of arrhythmias. In addition, manually diagnosing cardiac arrhythmias using ECG data is time-intensive and error-prone. With better training, deep learning (DL) could be a better alternative for fast and automatic classification. The present study introduces a novel deep learning architecture, specifically a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), for the classification of cardiac arrhythmias. The model was trained and validated with real and noise-attenuated ECG signals from the MIT-BIH dataset. The main aim is to address the limitations of traditional electrocardiograms (ECG) in the diagnosis of arrhythmias, which can be affected by noise and randomness of events, leading to misdiagnosis and errors. To evaluate the model performance, the confusion matrix is used to calculate the model accuracy, precision, recall, f1 score, average and AUC-ROC. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed model achieved outstanding performance, with 1.00 and 0.99 accuracies in the training and testing datasets, respectively, and can be a fast and automatic alternative for the diagnosis of arrhythmias.

We have witnessed the impact of ML in disease diagnosis, image recognition and classification, and many more related fields. Healthcare is a sensitive field related to people’s lives in which decisions need to be carefully taken based on solid evidence. However, most ML models are complex, i.e., black-box, meaning they do not provide insights into how the problems are solved or why such decisions are proposed. This lack of interpretability is the main reason why some ML models are not widely used yet in real environments such as healthcare. Therefore, it would be beneficial if ML models could provide explanations allowing physicians to make data-driven decisions that lead to higher quality service. Recently, several efforts have been made in proposing interpretable machine learning models to become more convenient and applicable in real environments. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey and symmetry phenomena of IML models and their applications in healthcare. The fundamental characteristics, theoretical underpinnings needed to develop IML, and taxonomy for IML are presented. Several examples of how they are applied in healthcare are investigated to encourage and facilitate the use of IML models in healthcare. Furthermore, current limitations, challenges, and future directions that might impact applying ML in healthcare are addressed.

In recent years, the web phishing attack has become one of the most serious web security problems, in which the phishers can steal significant financial information about the internet users to carry out financial thefts. Several blacklist‐based conventional phishing website detection methods are used to predict the phishing websites. However, numerous phishing websites are not predicted precisely by these blacklist‐based conventional methods since many new phishing websites are constantly developed and launched on the Web over time. In this study, hybrid intelligent phishing website prediction using deep neural networks (DNNs) with evolutionary algorithm‐based feature selection and weighting methods are suggested to enhance the phishing website prediction. In the proposed hybrid intelligent phishing website prediction approaches, the most influential features and the optimal weights of website features are heuristically identified with the genetic algorithm (GA) to help in increasing the accuracy of phishing website prediction. Accordingly, the website features selected and weighted by the GA are utilised to train DNNs to accurately predict the phishing websites. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed hybrid intelligent phishing website prediction approaches achieved significantly higher classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and geometric mean in phishing website prediction compared to those proposed in other studies.

Over the last few years, web phishing attacks have been constantly evolving causing customers to lose trust in e-commerce and online services. Various tools and systems based on a blacklist of phishing websites are applied to detect the phishing websites. Unfortunately, the fast evolution of technology has led to the born of more sophisticated methods when building websites to attract users. Thus, the latest and newly deployed phishing websites; for example, zero-day phishing websites, cannot be detected by using these blacklist-based approaches. Several recent research studies have been adopting machine learning techniques to identify phishing websites and utilizing them as an early alarm method to identify such threats. However, the important website features have been selected based on human experience or frequency analysis of website features in most of these approaches. In this paper, intelligent phishing website detection using particle swarm optimization-based feature weighting is proposed to enhance the detection of phishing websites. The proposed approach suggests utilizing particle swarm optimization (PSO) to weight various website features effectively to achieve higher accuracy when detecting phishing websites. In particular, the proposed PSO-based website feature weighting is used to differentiate between the various features in websites, based on how important they contribute towards recognizing the phishing from legitimate websites. The experimental results indicated that the proposed PSO-based feature weighting achieved outstanding improvements in terms of classification accuracy, true positive and negative rates, and false positive and negative rates of the machine learning models using only fewer websites features utilized in the detection of phishing websites.

The advancements in intelligent systems have contributed tremendously to the fields of bioinformatics, health, and medicine. Intelligent classification and prediction techniques have been used in studying microarray datasets, which store information about the ways used to express the genes, to assist greatly in diagnosing chronic diseases, such as cancer in its earlier stage, which is important and challenging. However, the high-dimensionality and noisy nature of the microarray data lead to slow performance and low cancer classification accuracy while using machine learning techniques. In this paper, a hybrid filter-genetic feature selection approach has been proposed to solve the high-dimensional microarray datasets problem which ultimately enhances the performance of cancer classification precision. First, the filter feature selection methods including information gain, information gain ratio, and Chi-squared are applied in this study to select the most significant features of cancerous microarray datasets. Then, a genetic algorithm has been employed to further optimize and enhance the selected features in order to improve the proposed method’s capability for cancer classification. To test the proficiency of the proposed scheme, four cancerous microarray datasets were used in the study—this primarily included breast, lung, central nervous system, and brain cancer datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid filter-genetic feature selection approach achieved better performance of several common machine learning methods in terms of Accuracy, Recall, Precision, and F-measure.

The problem of Web phishing attacks has grown considerably in recent years and phishing is considered as one of the most dangerous Web crimes, which may cause tremendous and negative effects on online business. In a Web phishing attack, the phisher creates a forged or phishing website to deceive Web users in order to obtain their sensitive financial and personal information. Several conventional techniques for detecting phishing website have been suggested to cope with this problem. However, detecting phishing websites is a challenging task, as most of these techniques are not able to make an accurate decision dynamically as to whether the new website is phishing or legitimate. This paper presents a methodology for phishing website detection based on machine learning classifiers with a wrapper features selection method. In this paper, some common supervised machine learning techniques are applied with effective and significant features selected using the wrapper features selection approach to accurately detect phishing websites. The experimental results demonstrated that the performance of the machine learning classifiers was improved by using the wrapper-based features selection. Moreover, the machine learning classifiers with the wrapper-based features selection outperformed the machine learning classifiers with other features selection methods.
