This chapter provides a systematic literature review with aspects of the network planning of UFT and urban distribution innovations. As mentioned previously, the logistics providers are intended to find appropriate internal approaches to accommodate with the exogenous trends as well as to reduce negative environmental externalities created by freight activities. The application of urban distribution innovation is an efficient solution for achieving these purposes of logistics providers.

Scenario analysis (SA) is a systematical method that is not only to describe a sample prediction about the future, but also a description of a set of possible eventualities relating what the world may look like over a certain time horizon.

This chapter presents the theoretical framework of foresight research on sustainable urban freight transport. As mentioned in chapter 2, considerable research focuses on the short-term planning of SUFT. This finding reveals that the theoretical framework for the long-term planning of SUFT remains lacking (Gap 4 as mentioned in Chapter 2).

This chapter presents the conceptual model of sustainable inner-urban intermodal transportation (SIUIT), which can be used as the future operational model of urban freight transportation. This chapter followed both the research framework of this work (in Chapter 2) and the theoretical framework of foresight research (in Chapter 3). In Chapter 2, the systematic literature review determined 11 urban distribution innovations in sustainable urban logistics.

Large cities and megacities are influential in the global economy, and urban freight transport plays a critical role in urban economic growth. Urban logistics is a complex process that involves several factors such as urban geographic environment, city road network, location of freight destination, delivery range, and capacity of transport modes.

Economic growth necessitates flexible transportation to eases access to resources and trade markets. Meanwhile, transportation is the main component of promoting social-intelligent approaches and economic development. Urban freight transport as the last step of the supply chain, playing a critical role in urban economic growth.

This chapter illustrates the network model of 2.x-tier modular & sustainable urban freight transport, which by a systematic consideration of the tendency analysis on large and megacities and conceptual model of SIUIT. As mentioned in Chapter 1, this work aims to design an innovative urban freight network to respond to future challenges in large and megacities. To this end, the tendencies of urban spatial development on large and megacities, as the exogenous trends of SUFT, need to discuss further.

PurposeFreight network planning and the application of distribution innovations are popular fields of research on sustainable urban logistics. However, considerable research on freight network design lacks a comprehensive consideration of the application of distribution innovations. This observation implies that sustainable urban freight research appears highly fragmented in topics of network design and distribution innovations. From the perspective of long-term planning, this situation possibly serves as a barrier to further promotion of sustainability. The objective of this paper is to analyze existing research gaps of literature to further promote the sustainability of urban logistics systems from a future perspective.Design/methodology/approachThis paper employs a systematic literature review (SLR) method, which covers 164 papers and research works published in 2013–2018. The article corpus involved the innovative schemes of freight network design and the emerging delivery concepts in cities. Based on an analysis of articles' relevance, the most significant research contributions on both city logistics network design and exploitation of distribution innovations are detected.FindingsThis paper has found four research gaps in aspects of network design and distribution innovations. To respond to these gaps, we propose the research framework of sustainable and flexible future urban freight planning (SFFUFP) based on trends of city development, while discussing further research direction on urban freight planning.Originality/valueThe authors have found four research gaps in aspects of both urban freight network design and distribution innovations in which scholars could be encouraged to contribute. The research framework of SFFUFP can further promote sustainable urban logistics from a view of future management.

This paper aims to construct a theoretical research framework for sustainable urban freight transport (SUFT) from the perspectives of future urban development and distribution innovations, and appropriate research methods are discussed, as well. Urban freight transport plays a critical role in the promotion of sustainable and livable cities. According to the literature review, considerable research on SUFT has focused on resolving some specific problems with a short-term perspective. The existence of an urban freight transport strategy is noted, which should be embedded in an overall sustainable development strategy with a long-term perspective (approximately 20–30 years). Nevertheless, considerable research has paid scant attention to the long-term planning of SUFT. Given this, this paper contributes to the closure of this gap. First, this paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) to highlight published papers involving foresight research within the past 16 years (2003–2018). This step contributes to the understanding of research methods that can be used in foresight research. Subsequently, this paper discusses the impacts of both urban development and distribution innovations on future SUFT, and these effects are used to select the appropriate methods to construct the theoretical research framework. Finally, the theoretical research framework of long-term planning for SUFT is developed on the basis of two future perspectives: the trends of urban development and the application of urban distribution innovations. This framework is intended to provide an approach to designing sustainable urban logistics, taking into account urban development and distribution innovations.

Urban population growth has permanently increased the commodity demands and freight flow within urban areas. The retail/postal industry is intent on finding appropriate internal approaches and a new business model to respond to the adverse impacts generated by urban freight activities. Usage of emerging transport modes is an efficient solution for these industries. Nevertheless, considerable research has paid less attention to the implementation status of distribution innovations, as well as to their suitability and application restrictions. Concurrently, a comprehensive consideration of various distribution innovations that operate together as a system is lacking. To this end, this paper adopted a literature review method and GE multifactorial analysis. Specifically, this paper reviewed the related articles that were published in the past six years (2013–2018) to define the concept of distribution innovations. In addition, we adopted the approach of GE multifactorial analysis to analyze the application status of distribution innovations from the perspective of academic research and company implementation. Following the suitability assessment and application of restriction analysis, we proposed the concept of sustainable inner-urban intermodal transport (SIUIT) for the retail/postal industry. This paper contributes to the sustainable urban freight literature by exploring possible future research directions of SIUIT.
