Munish Puri FRSC is a Biotechnology Program Coordinator and Group Head of Bioprocessing, the College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. Professor Puri has spent his career in academia (20+ years) and successfully led a range of multidisciplinary industry-funded projects and multi-institutional funding. He spearheads a research team that uses bioprocessing (precision fermentation) to address global challenges in sustainability, food security, and human wellbeing. His lab has four major research programs: a) cell factories for metabolite production such as therapeutic proteins, enzymes, and lipids, b) food biotechnology for nutraceutical extraction and functional food development relating to omega-3 fatty acids, c) health substantiation by validation of bioactives' functionality, and d) nanotechnology for enhancing thermostability of enzymes with applications for health products and bioenergy. Collectively, this research has led to a high number of highly cited publications (155+ peer-reviewed publications; h index 49) reflecting transformative research reaching a broad readership. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, and an active SA representative of a national society, Bioprocessing Network Australia. He is particularly recognized for his discovery of i) single-cell oil production and ii) enzyme-based technology for food bioactive extraction, a technology which is safe and improves product yield.
