Prof. Raffaella Chiaramonte is an Associate Professor of Experimental Medicine and Pathophysiology at the Department of Health Sciences, University of Milan, Italy. Before that, she served as a Researcher and Assistant Professor in the same field from 2002 to 2018. She earned her Degree in Biological Sciences in 1989 and her Specialization in Biotechnological Applications in 1993. Her research focuses on cancer cell biology, particularly the pathological interaction between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment and its impact on tumor progression. Specifically, her interest is focused on the study of the Notch pathway, crucially involved in cell–cell communication, with significant findings elucidating the mechanisms involved in crucial steps of multiple myeloma progression including the localization of cancer cells in the bone marrow and induction of bone resorption and tumor angiogenesis. The most recent research explores the role of extracellular vesicles as biological vehicles of molecular messengers contributing to the malicious interplay between tumor cells and the nearby cell populations as well as their possible use as pharmacological targets or sources of predictive biomarkers.
