Biography

Luis Oñate-Sánchez is the group leader and Associate Professor at the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In the last few years, his lab has identified different molecular mechanisms that regulate seed vigor—specifically dormancy and germination—providing important conceptual insights into the biomechanics of these traits. More recently, he has started to focus on a novel molecular mechanism mediating nutrient stress responses during and upon seedling establishment with a high biotechnological potential to bolster crop tolerance to stresses. Dr. Oñate-Sánchez previously worked as a research scientist in the Plant Industry Division at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industry Research Organization (CSIRO) and as a postdoctoral researcher of molecular, cell, and developmental Biology at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Oñate-Sánchez graduated in Biology with first class honors at Universidad de Murcia Facultad de Biología in 1993 and obtained his PhD degree in Biological Sciences from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 1997. Dr. Oñate-Sánchez has been a member of the Spanish Society for Plant Biology (SEBP) since 2010.
