Healthcare accessibility has become an issue of social equity. An accurate estimation of existing healthcare accessibility is vital to plan and allocate health resources. Healthcare capacity, population demand, and geographic impedance are three essential factors to measure spatial accessibility. Additionally, geographic impedance is usually represented with a function of travel time. In this paper, the three-step floating catchment area (3SFCA) method is improved from the perspectives of the temporal dimension and population demand. Specifically, the travel time from the population location to the service site is precisely calculated by introducing real-time traffic conditions instead of utilizing empirical speed in previous studies. Additionally, with the utilization of real-time traffic, a dynamic result of healthcare accessibility is derived during different time periods. In addition, since the medical needs of the elderly are higher than that of the young, a demand weight index of demand is introduced to adjust the population demand. A case study of healthcare accessibility in Wuhan shows that the proposed method is effective to measure healthcare accessibility during different time periods. The spatial accessibility disparities of communities and crowdedness of hospitals are identified as an important reference for the balance between the supply and demand of medical resources.

Nighttime light (NTL) remote sensing data have been widely used to derive socioeconomic indicators at the national and regional scales to study regional economic development. However, most previous studies only chose a single measurement indicator (such as GDP) and adopted simple regression methods to investigate the economic development of a certain area based on DMSP-OLS or NPP-VIIRS stable NTL data. The status quo shows the problems of using a single evaluation index—it has a low evaluation precision. The LJ1-01 satellite is the first dedicated NTL remote sensing satellite in the world, launched in July 2018. The data provided by LJ1-01 have a higher spatial resolution and fewer blooming phenomena. In this paper, we compared the accuracy of the LJ1-01 data and NPP-VIIRS data in detecting county-level multidimensional economic development. In three provinces in China, namely, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi, 20 socioeconomic parameters were selected from the following five perspectives: economic conditions, people’s livelihood, social development, public resources and natural vulnerability. Then, a County-level Economic Index (CEI) was constructed to evaluate the level of multidimensional economic development, with the spatial pattern of the multidimensional economic development also identified across the study area. The present study adopted the random forest (RF) and linear regression (LR) algorithms to establish the regression model individually, and the results were evaluated by cross-validation. The results show that the RF algorithm greatly improves the accuracy of the model compared with the LR algorithm, and thus is suitable for the study of NTL data. In addition, a better determinate coefficient (R2) based on the LJ1-01 data (0.8168) was obtained than that from the NPP-VIIRS data (0.7245) in the RF model, which reflects that the LJ1-01 data offer better potential in the evaluation of socioeconomic parameters and can be used to identify, both accurately and efficiently, multidimensional economic development at the county level.

Storm surge disasters result in severe casualties and economic losses. Accurate prediction of storm surge water level is crucial for disaster assessment, early warning, and effective disaster management. Machine learning methods are relatively more efficient and straightforward compared to numerical simulation approaches. However, most of the current research on storm surge water level prediction based on machine learning methods is primarily focused on point predictions. In this study, we explore the feasibility of spatial water level prediction using the ConvLSTM model. We focus on the coastal area of Guangdong Province and employ MIKE21(2019) software to simulate historical typhoons that have made landfall in the region from 1991 to 2018. We construct two datasets: one for direct water level prediction and the other for indirect water level prediction based on water level changes. Utilizing the ConvLSTM network, we employ it to forecast storm surges on both datasets, effectively capturing both temporal and spatial characteristics and thus ensuring the production of dependable results. When directly predicting water levels, we achieve an MAE (mean absolute error) of 0.026 m and an MSE (mean squared error) of 0.0038 m2. In contrast, the indirect prediction approach yields even more promising results, with an MAE of 0.014 m and an MSE of 0.0007 m2. Compared to traditional numerical simulation methods, the ConvLSTM-based approach is simpler, faster, and able to predict water levels accurately without boundary conditions or topographies. Furthermore, we consider worst-case scenarios by predicting the maximum water increase value using the random forest model. Our results indicate that the random forest model can serve as a valuable reference for forecasting the maximum water increase value of typhoon storm surges, supporting effective emergency responses to disasters.

Online public opinion reflects social conditions and public attitudes regarding special social events. Therefore, analyzing the temporal and spatial distributions of online public opinion topics can contribute to understanding issues of public concern, grasping and guiding the developing trend of public opinion. However, how to evaluate the validity of classification of online public opinion remains a challenging task in the topic mining field. By combining a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) pre-training model with the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model, we propose an evaluation method to determine the optimal classification number of topics from the perspective of semantic similarity. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified based on the standard Chinese corpus THUCNews. Taking Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related geotagged posts on Weibo in Wuhan city as an example, we used the proposed method to generate five categories of public opinion topics. Combining spatial and temporal information with the classification results, we analyze the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of the five optimal public opinion topics, which are found to be consistent with the epidemic development, demonstrating the feasibility of our method when applied to practical cases.

The analysis and modeling of spatial and temporal changes in land use can reveal changing urban spatial patterns and trends. In this paper, we introduce a linear transformation optimization Markov (LTOM) model that can be exploited to estimate the state transition probability matrix of land use, building a loosely coupled ANN-CA-LTOM model for simulating and predicting land use changes. The advantages of this model are that it is flexible and high expansibility; it can maintain semantic coupling between the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Cellular Automata (CA), and LTOM model and enhance their functions; and it can break the limitation of requiring two periods of land use data when calculating the transition probability matrix. We also construct a suitability atlas of land use as the transition rules into the CA-LTOM model, taking into account the regional natural and socioeconomic driver factors, by exploiting the ANN model. The ANN-CA-LTOM model is employed to simulate the distribution of the three major types of land use, i.e., construction land, agricultural land, and unused land, in the Nansha District, China, in 2018 and 2020. The results show that the model performs well and the overall accuracy of the land use simulation was 97.72%, with a kappa coefficient of 0.962761. Furthermore, the simulated and predicted results of land use changes from 2021 to 2023 in Nansha District show changing trends in construction, agricultural, and unused land use. This study provides an approach for estimating a Markov transition probability matrix and a coupled mode of the models for simulating and predicting land use changes.

Accurate prediction of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration is crucial for improving environmental conditions and effectively controlling air pollution. However, some existing studies could ignore the nonlinearity and spatial correlation of time series data observed from stations, and it is difficult to avoid the redundancy between features during feature selection. To further improve the accuracy, this study proposes a hybrid model based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD), minimal-redundancy-maximal-relevance (mRMR), and geographically weighted neural network (GWNN) for hourly PM2.5 concentration prediction, named EMD-mRMR-GWNN. Firstly, the original PM2.5 concentration sequence with distinct nonlinearity and non-stationarity is decomposed into multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residual component using EMD. IMFs are further classified and reconstructed into high-frequency and low-frequency components using the one-sample t-test. Secondly, the optimal feature subset is selected from high-frequency and low-frequency components with mRMR for the prediction model, thus holding the correlation between features and the target variable and reducing the redundancy among features. Thirdly, the residual component is predicted with the simple moving average (SMA) due to its strong trend and autocorrelation, and GWNN is used to predict the high-frequency and low-frequency components. The final prediction of the PM2.5 concentration value is calculated by an artificial neural network (ANN) composed of the predictive values of each component. PM2.5 concentration prediction experiments in three representational cities, such as Beijing, Wuhan, and Kunming were carried out. The proposed model achieved high accuracy with a coefficient of determination greater than 0.92 in forecasting PM2.5 concentration for the next 1 h. We compared this model with four baseline models in forecasting PM2.5 concentration for the next few hours and found it performed the best in PM2.5 concentration prediction. The experimental results indicated the proposed model can improve prediction accuracy.
