This paper proposes a novel feature selection method utilizing Rényi min-entropy-based algorithm for achieving a highly efficient brain–computer interface (BCI). Usually, wavelet packet transformation (WPT) is extensively used for feature extraction from electro-encephalogram (EEG) signals. For the case of multiple-class problem, classification accuracy solely depends on the effective feature selection from the WPT features. In conventional approaches, Shannon entropy and mutual information methods are often used to select the features. In this work, we have shown that our proposed Rényi min-entropy-based approach outperforms the conventional methods for multiple EEG signal classification. The dataset of BCI competition-IV (contains 4-class motor imagery EEG signal) is used for this experiment. The data are preprocessed and separated as the classes and used for the feature extraction using WPT. Then, for feature selection Shannon entropy, mutual information, and Rényi min-entropy methods are applied. With the selected features, four-class motor imagery EEG signals are classified using several machine learning algorithms. The results suggest that the proposed method is better than the conventional approaches for multiple-class BCI.

Lung cancer is one of the fatal diseases whose early diagnosis is essential to mitigate the death rate. Computed Tomography (CT) scans are widely used for lung cancer diagnosis, but manual interpretation by health professionals can lead to inconsistent results. To address this, we propose Lung-AttNet, a novel lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) model enhanced with an attention mechanism. Lung-AttNet incorporates a convolutional block with a Lightweight Global Attention Module (LGAM) to effectively distinguish between lung cancer types. The convolutional block extracts both low- and high-dimensional features, while LGAM captures feature dependencies across channel and spatial dimensions. The model is evaluated using the Kaggle CT scan dataset, which includes four classes: adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and normal. Extensive experiments, including ablation studies, 5-fold cross-validation, and explainable AI (XAI) techniques such as Grad-CAM and LIME, demonstrate that Lung-AttNet achieves an average accuracy of 91.5%. Furthermore, to address medical data sensitivity and privacy concerns, the model is deployed in a Federated Learning (FL) framework, where the global model is trained using weights from local models rather than sharing raw data. In the FL environment, Lung-AttNet achieves an accuracy of 92% with 2 and 3 clients, underscoring its robustness and adaptability for real-world applications.

Multiclass functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) signal classification has become a convenient way for optical brain-computer interface. fNIRS signal classification with high accuracy is a challenging assignment while the signals are produced by means of voluntary and imagery movements of the same limb. Since the activation in time and space of voluntary and imagery movement show a similar pattern, the classification accuracy by the conventional shallow classifiers cannot reach an acceptable range. This paper proposes an accuracy improvement approach with the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In this work, voluntary and imagery hand movements (left hand and right hand) were performed by several participants. These four-class signals were acquired utilizing fNIRS devices. The signals were separated based on the tasks and filtered. With manual feature extraction, the signals were classified by support vector machine and linear discriminant analysis. The automatic feature extraction and classification mechanism of the CNN were applied to the fNIRS signals. From the results, it was found that CNN improves the classification accuracy to an acceptable range, which has not been achieved by any convolutional network.
