Xiangyang Hou is a grassland ecologist by training. He received his BSc degree in Agronomy (1983) from the Shanxi Agriculture University in Shanxi, China. He was the leader for the key project of climate change and grassland ecosystem management from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and for the Sino-Russia key project from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China. He was a co-investigator of the international collaborative program of “grassland ecosystem services and poverty alleviation” from the ESPA, United Kingdom, and a co-investigator of the international collaborative program of grassland management from the ACIAR, Australia. He is the principal investigator of the National Key Basic Research Program of China, and the co-investigator of the international collaborative program of grassland management modeling from the ACIAR, Australia.
