Fausto A. Canales was born in Managua, Nicaragua in 1981. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Universidad Católica of Nicaragua in 2003. Fausto completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in water resources and environmental sanitation from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, in 2009 and 2015, correspondingly. From 2007 to 2015, he was a member of the renewable energies and sustainability research group at the Institute of Hydraulic Research at UFRGS. He worked as a Consultant and Civil Contractor in Nicaragua from 2015 to 2017, mainly in hydraulics and small steel and concrete structures projects. Since January 2018, he has been a full-time Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental at Universidad de la Costa, Colombia. He is the leader of the Engineering Research Group for Sustainability (https://scienti.minciencias.gov.co/gruplac/jsp/visualiza/visualizagr.jsp?nro=00000000004749), which due to its publication record is in the maximum category in the rank of the Colombian Ministry of Sciences since 2017. Prof. Canales's publications and research interests include renewable energies, hydropower, water resources, optimization, and mathematical modeling.
