Metamaterials (MTMs) are structured materials with subwavelength features that can be engineered to have some unique properties not found in nature, such as negative refractive index, reversed Doppler effect, and reversed Cherenkov radiation. Based on these novel MTMs, several important research groups have made great attempts to develop novel MTM-inspired vacuum electron devices (VEDs) and accelerators. Just as solid-state power devices are innovated by incessant emerging of new semiconductor materials, VEDs can also be inspired by MTMs to have very remarkable advantages, such as smaller size, higher power, higher efficiency, and/or larger gain relative to conventional VEDs, such as traveling-wave tubes, backward-wave oscillators, and klystrons. Similarly, relative to conventional accelerators, MTM-inspired accelerators have obvious advantages, such as smaller size and higher accelerating gradient. Furthermore, MTM-inspired devices have promising applications in areas such as radar, communication, electronic warfare, microwave heating, and imaging.

Since its invention in 2009, Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attracted great attention because of its low cost, numerous options of efficiency enhancement, ease of manufacturing and high-performance. Within a short span of time, the PSC has already outperformed thin-film and multicrystalline silicon solar cells. A current certified efficiency of 25.2% demonstrates that it has the potential to replace its forerunner generations. However, to commercialize PSCs, some problems need to be addressed. The toxic nature of lead which is the major component of light absorbing layer, and inherited stability issues of fabricated devices are the major hurdles in the industrialization of this technology. Therefore, new researching areas focus on the lead-free metal halide perovskites with analogous optical and photovoltaic performances. Tin being nontoxic and as one of group IV(A) elements, is considered as the most suitable alternate for lead because of their similarities in chemical properties. Efficiencies exceeding 13% have been recorded using Tin halide perovskite based devices. This review summarizes progress made so far in this field, mainly focusing on the stability and photovoltaic performances. Role of different cations and their composition on device performances and stability have been involved and discussed. With a considerable room for enhancement of both efficiency and device stability, different optimized strategies reported so far have also been presented. Finally, the future developing trends and prospects of the PSCs are analyzed and forecasted.

Mammalian voltage‐gated calcium channels (Ca V ) play critical roles in cardiac excitability, synaptic transmission, and gene transcription. Dysfunctions in Ca V are implicated in a variety of cardiac and neurodevelopmental disorders. Current pharmacological approaches to enhance Ca V activity are limited by off‐target effects, drug metabolism issues, cytotoxicity, and imprecise modulation. Additionally, genetically‐encoded channel activators and optogenetic tools are restricted by gene delivery challenges and biosafety concerns. Here a novel terahertz (THz) wave‐based method to upregulate Ca V 1.2, a key subtype of Ca V , and boost Ca V 1‐mediated Ca 2+ signaling in neurons without introducing exogenous DNA is presented. Using molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that 42.5 THz (7.05 µm, 1418 cm −1 ) waves enhance Ca 2+ conductance in Ca V 1.2 by resonating with the stretching mode of the ‐COO − group in the selectivity filter. Electrophysiological recordings and Ca 2+ imaging confirm that these waves rapidly, reversibly, and non‐thermally increase calcium influx of Ca V 1.2 in HEK293 cells and induce acute Ca 2+ signals in neurons. Furthermore, this irradiation upregulates critical Ca V 1 signals, including CREB phosphorylation and c‐Fos expression, in vitro and in vivo, without raising significant biosafety risks. This DNA‐free, non‐invasive approach offers a promising approach for modulating Ca V gating and Ca 2+ signaling and treating diseases characterized by deficits in Ca V functions.

We proposed an all-metal metamaterial slow-wave structure (MSWS) that consists of a circular waveguide periodically loaded with complementary electric split-ring resonators (CeSRRs). We set up an equivalent circuit theoretical model of MSWS and analyzed its high-frequency characteristics. Also, based on the surface current distribution on the CeSRR obtained by using the eigenmode solver in the CST Microwave Studio, a method of calculating the resonant frequency of the CeSRR was proposed. Furthermore, an MSWS with RF coupling port was designed, simulated, fabricated, and experimentally characterized. The dispersion characteristics of MSWS obtained by interpreting the experimental transmission characteristics agreed well with those predicted by theory as well as simulation. Based on the results of simulation and experiment, a concept of ``resonance-coupling'' was proposed for the passband of MSWS for frequencies below the cutoff frequency of an empty circular waveguide. The role of the slot-line in the CeSRR in influencing the performance of MSWS was also analyzed. The proposed MSWS has wide potential applications in vacuum electron devices, such as backward-wave oscillator and extended interaction klystron.

The advances of high-frequency vacuum electron devices (VEDs) in China are reviewed in this paper, including traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) based on novel slow-wave structures (SWSs), high harmonic TWT amplifier, gyrotrons, Smith-Purcell (SP) radiation sources, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) sources, and terahertz (THz) radiation sources in ion-focused beam-plasma system. As one of the most widely used VEDs, TWTs based on folded type SWSs, planar SWSs, and grating type SWSs are studied theoretically and experimentally from Ka-band to R-band. Using folded type SWSs, two TWT amplifiers are developed. As high-power millimeter wave and THz wave sources, gyrotron TWTs, gyrotron oscillators, and gyroklystrons are presented. Moreover, this paper shows SP radiation sources, SPPs sources, and THz radiation sources in ion-focused beam-plasma system open good prospects for developing high-frequency VEDs with new mechanisms, which undoubtedly brings about innovative changes for the development of VEDs.

A miniaturized, high electronic efficiency, S-band metamaterial extended interaction klystron (MEIK) is proposed. The metamaterial-based extended interaction resonant cavities were designed, fabricated, and tested, the assembled and cold-tested results confirm the feasibility of miniaturization in MEIK. Furthermore, the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation predicts that, typically, when the beam voltage and current are 30 kV and 3 A, respectively, the focusing magnetic field is 1000 G, a 3-cavity MEIK yields the output power of 56 kW at 2.453 GHz, with the saturated gain of 47 dB and the electronic efficiency of 62%, and, importantly, with the cavity diameter of its interaction structure being ∼1/2 of a conventional extended interaction klystron. As a power amplifier, the emerging MEIK with its miniaturization and high electronic efficiency has potential applications such as in future accelerators and microwave heating systems.
