Semisolid metal (SSM) processing or thixoforming is widely known as a technology that involves the formation of metal alloys between solidus and liquidus temperatures. For the procedure to operate successfully, the microstructure of the starting material must consist of solid near‐globular grains surrounded by a liquid matrix and a wide solidus‐to‐liquidus transition area. Currently, this process is industrially successful, generating a variety of products with high quality parts in various industrial sectors. Throughout the years since its inception, a number of technologies to produce the appropriate globular microstructure have been developed and applied worldwide. The main aim of this paper is to classify the presently available SSM technologies and present a comprehensive review of the potential mechanisms that lead to microstructural alterations during the preparation of feedstock materials for SSM processing.

In this study, the effects of different amounts of magnesium (Mg) on the microstructures and tensile properties of thixoformed Al–5%Si–Cu alloys were investigated. Three different alloys containing various amounts of Mg (0.5, 0.8 and 1.2wt%) were prepared through the cooling slope casting technique, before they were thixoformed using a compression press. Several of the thixoformed samples were then treated with a T6 heat treatment, that is, solution treatment at 525°C for 8h, quenching in warm water at 60°C, followed by aging at 155°C for 4h. All of the samples were then characterised by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis as well as by tensile tests. The results revealed that magnesium was able to refine the size of α-Al globules and the eutectic silicon in the samples. It was also observed that a compact π-Al9FeMg3Si5 phase was formed when the magnesium content was 0.8wt% and 1.2wt%. The mechanical properties of the thixoformed alloys improved significantly after the T6 heat treatment. The highest attainment was recorded by the latter alloy (i.e. with 1.2wt%Mg) with its ultimate tensile strength (UTS) as high as 306MPa, yield strength (YS), 264MPa, and elongation to fracture of 1.8%. The fracture of thixoformed alloy with a low Mg content (0.5wt%) showed a combination of dimple and cleavage fracture, whereas in the alloy that contained the highest Mg content (1.2wt%), cleavage fracture was observed

As a common material in mould and die application, AISI D2 cold work tool steel has proven to be a promising chosen material in the industries. However, challenges remain in using AISI D2 through a modified version with a considerable progress having been made in recent years. This paper provides a critical review of the original as-cast AISI D2 cold work tool steel up to the modified version. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of current modified tool steel trend; the machinability of AISI D2 (drilling, milling, turning, grinding and EDM/WEDM; and the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of these cold work tool steels due to the presence of alloy materials in the steel matrix. The doping of rare earth alloy element, new steel fabrication processes, significant process parameter in machinability and surface treatment shows that there have been few empirical investigations into these cold work tool steel alloys. This study has discovered that cold work tool steel will remain to be explored in order to survive in the steel industries.

Recent developments in the field of carbon nanotube (CNT) have attracted attentions on a new development of aluminum matrix composite (AMC). Homogenous dispersion and interfacial bonding of CNT/metal matrix are the two main problems yet to have sound solutions. In general, to ensure uniform dispersion, the overall process can be divided into three steps: preprocessing, mixing and post processing. This paper summarizes previous works on solid and liquid processing techniques which some are more successful than others by looking at the improvement of the composite tensile strengths. On the other hand the interfacial bonding depends on the existance of Al4C3 phase and physical conditions of CNT. Both elements must be controlled for the optimized results. The review presented here would be used as references in the future works to fabricate higher strength CNT/aluminum composites.
