This paper addresses the target localization problem using time-of-arrival (TOA)-based technique under the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environment. To alleviate the adverse effect of the NLOS error on localization, a total least square framework integrated with a regularization term (RTLS) is utilized, and with which the localization problem can get rid of the ill-posed issue. However, it is challenging to figure out the exact solution for the considered localization problem. In this case, we convert the RTLS problem into a semidefinite program (SDP), and then obtain the solution of the original problem by solving a generalized trust region subproblem (GTRS). The proposed method has a relatively good robustness in localization even under the circumstance that the prior knowledge of the NLOS links or its distribution does not know. The outperformance of the proposed method is demonstrated in the simulations compared with other state-of-the-art techniques.

Ship fire is one of the greatest dangers to ship navigation safety. Nevertheless, typical detection methods have limited detection effectiveness and accuracy due to distance restrictions and ship motion. Although the issue can be addressed by image recognition algorithms based on deep learning, the computational complexity and efficiency for ship detection are tough. This paper proposes a lightweight target identification technique based on the modified YOLOv4-tiny algorithm for the precise and efficient detection of ship fires, taking into account the distinctive characteristics of ship fires and the marine environment. Initially, a multi-scale detection technique is applied to broaden the detection range and integrate deep semantic information, thereby enhancing the feature information of small targets and obscured objects and improving the detection precision. Then, the proposed algorithm employs the SE attention mechanism for inter-channel feature fusion to improve the capability of feature extraction and the precision of ship fire detection. Last but not least, picture transformation and migration learning are added to the small ship fire dataset to accelerate the convergence pace, improve the convergence effect, and reduce dataset dependence. The simulation experiments reveal that the proposed I-YOLOv4-tiny + SE model outperforms the benchmark algorithm in terms of ship fire detection accuracy and detection efficiency and that it satisfies the real-time ship fire warning criteria in demanding maritime environments.

Underwater acoustic Internet of Things Networks (UAIoTNs) play a crucial role in oceanographic and environmental monitoring, necessitating precise localization for optimal functionality. However, the underwater setting introduces significant challenges, encompassing the stratification effect arising from underwater heterogeneity, uncertainty in anchor positions due to currents, and variations in the signal transmission environment. These factors collectively impede the accurate estimation of location. Consequently, this paper addresses these challenges by analyzing and deriving a closed-form solution using a time-of-arrival (TOA)-based technique for 3D localization in UAIoTNs. The investigation establishes an underwater stratified propagation model, drawing inspiration from ray tracing theory and Snell’s law. Employing the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) framework, we explore scenarios both with and without considering perturbed anchors, utilizing the Banachiewicz-Schur theorem. To quantify the impact of the stratification effect and perturbed anchors on CRLB and mean square error (MSE), we further analyze and derive an MSE expression, employing Taylor-series linearization. Building on our analysis of the detrimental effects of stratification and inaccurate anchors, we introduce a multiple-weighted least squares (MWLS) algorithm to alleviate potential performance losses. This approach integrates a matrix operator in the update step, eliminating variable dependencies and resulting in a closed-form solution that circumvents the need for iterative processes. Our simulation results validate our analytical findings and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, showcasing improved localization accuracy across various scenarios when compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

This letter proposes a robust target localization technique for acoustic underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) that simultaneously experience the stratification effect and the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) bias. Specifically, we develop the range difference (RD)-based majorization minimization expression and its theoretical analysis, which leads to a surrogate function coupling with an iterative form. To figure out the initial estimate of the iteration, the proposed method converts the original localization problem into an RD-based generalized trust-region subproblem (RD-GTRS) after selecting a reference node. Eventually, an RD-based target localization approach (RD-TLA) is presented to iteratively estimate the final location. Simulation results show that the proposed RD-TLA method achieves better localization accuracy compared with other state-of-the-art methods in different scenarios.

Localization is one of the most critical tasks in wireless sensor networks, but achieving a relatively accurate location estimation is challenging when there have Byzantine fault and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) bias simultaneously. In this context, a localization method, based on received signal strength (RSS), is proposed in this letter to mitigate the impact of Byzantine fault and NLOS bias on the localization accuracy of wireless sensor networks. The proposed method relies on a Byzantine fault-tolerant localization algorithm (BFLA), which converts the localization problem into a generalized trust-region subproblem (GTRS) by applying certain approximations. In order to obtain a feasible solution to the GTRS, a blockcoordinate update (BCU) function with a regularization term is used to divide the localization problem into two subproblems. An iterative method, whose start-point is obtained by an unconstrained squared-range (USR) algorithm, is then used to obtain a solution. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, compared with the state-of-the-art approaches in different scenarios.
