Maria João Melo, PhD in Physical Chemistry (1995), is a senior scientist at the research centers LAQV-Requimte and the Institute of Medieval Studies at NOVA. She serves as the head of the Cultural Heritage line. Her current challenge is to enhance her interdisciplinary research and approach, at the intersection of social and natural sciences, while promoting public engagement.
She is Full Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration at NOVA School of Science and Technology and previously served as its president (2017-19). She is also the coordinator of its PhD Program in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. She is the author of over 100 publications in scientific journals listed in Web of Science. She has supervised 19 successful PhD theses and serves on the editorial board of Heritage Science and Dyes and Pigments.
