Surplus coke oven gases (COGs) and low grade hematite ores are abundant in Shanxi, China. Our group proposes a new process that could simultaneously enrich CH4from COG and produce separated magnetite from low grade hematite. In this work, low-temperature hydrogen reduction of hematite ore fines was performed in a fixed-bed reactor with a stirring apparatus, and a laboratory Davis magnetic tube was used for the magnetic separation of the resulting magnetite ore fines. The properties of the raw hematite ore, reduced products, and magnetic concentrate were analyzed and characterized by a chemical analysis method, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results indicated that, at temperatures lower than 400°C, the rate of reduction of the hematite ore fines was controlled by the interfacial reaction on the core surface. However, at temperatures higher than 450°C, the reaction was controlled by product layer diffusion. With increasing reduction temperature, the average utilization of hydrogen initially increased and tended to a constant value thereafter. The conversion of Fe2O3in the hematite ore played an important role in the total iron recovery and grade of the concentrate. The grade of the concentrate decreased, whereas the total iron recovery increased with the increasing Fe2O3conversion.

A large amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2) will be released during rural household coal combustion, causing serious environmental pollution. Therefore, it is very urgent to develop a clean and efficient fuel to substitute rural household coal controlling SO2 emission. In this paper, a new strategy toward scattered coal combustion with remarkably reducing SO2 emission was proposed. Coal and compound additive of Al2O3 and CaCO3 were blended and then copyrolysis at 1050 °C was performed to produce clean coke. First, the sulfur content of clean coke was reduced, meanwhile, generating sulfur fixation precursor during pyrolysis. Then, clean coke is used for efficient sulfur fixation during the subsequent combustion process to reduce SO2 emissions. The effects of combustion temperature, Al/S molar ratio, and the mechanism of sulfur retention during clean coke combustion were studied in the tube furnace and muffle furnace. The mechanism can be attributed the following reason: (a) CaS produced during pyrolysis and CaO decomposed by complex additives were oxidized during combustion, and CaO captured the SO2 released from clean coke combustion, which formed CaSO4. (b) CaSO4 reacts with Al2O3 to produce calcium sulfoaluminate at high temperatures, which improves the sulfur fixation efficiency of clean coke combustion at high temperatures. In a word, this new strategy can greatly reduce the emission of SO2, thus helping to solve rural household coal pollution problems.

Laterite ore is one of the important sources of nickel (Ni). However, it is difficult to liberate Ni from ore structure during reduction roasting. This paper provided an effective way for a robust recovery of Ni from laterite ore by H2 reduction using sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) as a promoter. . It was found that a Ni content of 9.97% and a Ni recovery of 99.24% were achieved with 20 wt% Na2S2O3 at 1,100°C. The promoting mechanism of Na2S2O3 in laterite ore reduction by H2 was also investigated. The thermogravimetric results suggested the formation of Na2Mg2SiO7, Na2SO3, Na2SO4, and S during the pyrolysis of laterite with Na2S2O3, among which the alkali metal salts could destroy the structures of nickel-bearing silicate minerals and hence release Ni, while S could participate in the formation of the low-melting-point eutectic phase of FeS-Fe. The formation of low-melting-point phases were further verified by the morphology analysis, which could improve the aggregation of Ni-Fe particles due to the capillary forces of FeS-Fe as well as the enhanced element migration by the liquid phase of sodium silicates during reduction.

Nowadays, the gaseous pollutant emissions, including particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) from household coal combustion, cause great threat to environment and public health by contributing to severe haze in China. Particularly, a clean coke free of the major pollutants precursors (sulfur and nitrogen compounds) by sulfur fixation and denitrification has been deemed as an effective strategy to reducing pollutants. In this paper, a preprocessed coke was prepared by co-pyrolysis of high-sulfur coal with the assistance of calcium-based and iron-based complexes at high temperature. The results show that high-temperature co-pyrolysis could remove the volatile compounds that are major precursors for the formation of gaseous pollutants from the raw coal. During the coking process, the sulfur can be removed by being fixed in the form of CaS in presence of a Ca-based complex, which could be beneficial for the CaSO4 during the coke combustion. The volatile nitrogen is transferred to the gas phase with the addition of Fe-based complexes, which effectively reduce the residual nitrogen in coke. As a result, Ca-based additives captured the released SO2 and formed CaSO4 during the combustion process. In addition, in the presence of Fe-based complexes, both char and CO react with NOx to form N2, which leads to a reduction in NOx emissions during combustion. Additionally, the replacement of current residential coal with a new type of clean coke is a facile method for reducing gaseous pollutant emissions from household activities to protect the atmospheric environment. The average emission factors (EFs) of PM, SO2, and NOx for the prepared clean coke were small during combustion and were much lower than the EFs of the tested raw coal, semicoke, and briquettes.
