Drought disasters jeopardize agricultural production and are expected to become more serious in the context of global climate change. However, in China, little attention has been paid to evaluating agricultural drought risk in humid areas (such as in Southwest China), which have also been affected by severe drought in recent years. In this work, we used the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), which was computed from high-quality monthly precipitation and temperature data from 92 rain-gauge stations across Southwest China, to study the drought characteristics (e.g., intensity, duration, and frequency) and their decadal variations from 1960 to 2017. Furthermore, we applied a widely accepted conceptual model that emphasizes the combined role of drought hazard (calculated by the intensity and frequency of drought) and agricultural drought vulnerability (integrated with high-resolution soil properties, climate, topography, irrigation, and gross domestic product) to conduct a spatial assessment of agricultural drought risk at a 1-km grid scale. The results revealed that drought has become more serious and frequent in Southwest China, especially since the 2000s. About 27.4% of the agricultural area has been exposed to an extremely high risk of drought, 33.5% to a high risk, 22.5% to a moderate risk, and 16.6% to a low risk. The extreme agricultural risk areas were located mainly in northeastern and southeastern Chongqing, southwestern Sichuan, northeastern and eastern Guizhou, and central and eastern Yunnan. Our findings highlighted that more attention should be paid to the agricultural drought risk in humid regions of China. Furthermore, this work could set the stage for policy makers and practitioners to take measures to reduce the agricultural drought risk in Southwest China.

Land use transition is essentially one of the manifestations of land use/cover change (LUCC). Although a large number of studies have focused on land use transitions on the macro scale, there are few studies on the micro scale. Based on the data of two high-resolution land use surveys, this study used a land use transfer matrix and GeoDetector model to explore the spatial-temporal patterns and driving forces of land use transitions at the village level in Pu County over a ten-year period. Results show that Pu County has experienced a drastic process of land use transition. More than 80% of cropland and grassland have been converted to forest land, and over 90% of the expansion of built-up land came from the occupation of forest land, cropland, and grassland. The driving forces of land use transition and its magnitude depended on the type of land use. The implementation of the policy of returning farmland to forest, or grain-for-green (GFG) was the main driving force for the large-scale conversion of cultivated land to forest land in Pu County. In the context of policy of returning farmland to forests, the hilly and gully regions of China’s Loess Plateau must balance between protecting the ecology and ensuring food security. Promoting the comprehensive consolidation of gully land and developing modern agriculture may be an important way to achieve a win-win goal of ecological protection and food security.

Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is important to the global energy balance and to hydrological cycling. However, the extent to which ET0 changes, the main driving factors, and especially the implications of its shift for drought in Southwest China are not clear. In this study, trends in Penman–Monteith ET0 and other climatic parameters at 79 stations in Southwest China from 1960 to 2018 were investigated by using the Mann–Kendall test. Furthermore, partial correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used to determine the dominant climate driving factors in changes in ET0. The relative contribution of precipitation and ET0 to drought duration was also quantified based on spatial multiple linear regression. Results revealed that annual ET0 decreased significantly (p < 0.01) at a rate of 14.1 mm per decade from 1960 to 2000, and this decrease disappeared around 2000. For the entire study period, the sunshine duration (Tsun) was the most closely correlated with and played a dominant role in the variations in ET0 at both annual and seasonal (summer and autumn) timescales, whereas the relative humidity was the most dominant factor in the spring and winter. Trends in the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index revealed that drought has become more serious in Southwest China, and ET0 has made a greater contribution to the duration of drought than precipitation. Our findings highlight that more attention should be paid to the impacts of ET0 changes on drought in Southwest China. Furthermore, these results can provide a reference for the allocation of water resources and the implementation of countermeasures to climate change.

Drought disasters jeopardize the production of vegetation and are expected to exert impacts on human well-being in the context of global climate change. However, spatiotemporal variations in drought characteristics (including the drought duration, intensity, and frequency), specifically for vegetation areas within a growing season, remain largely unknown. Here, we first constructed a normalized difference vegetation index to estimate the length of the growing season for each pixel (8 km) by four widely used phenology estimation methods; second, we analyzed the temporal and spatial patterns of climate factors and drought characteristics (in terms of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI)), within a growing season over vegetation areas of the northern hemisphere before and after the critical time point of 1998, which was marked by the onset of a global warming hiatus. Finally, we extracted the highly drought-vulnerable areas of vegetation by examining the sensitivity of the gross primary production to the SPEI to explore the underlying effects of drought variation on vegetation. The results revealed, first, that significant (p < 0.05) increases in precipitation, temperature, and the SPEI (a wetting trend) occurred from 1982 to 2015. The growing season temperature increased even more statistically significant after 1998 than before. Second, the duration and frequency of droughts changed abruptly and decreased considerably from 1998 to 2015; and this wetting trend was located mainly in high-latitude areas. Third, at the biome level, the wetting areas occurred mainly in the tundra, boreal forest or taiga, and temperate coniferous forest biomes, whereas the highly drought-vulnerable areas were mainly located in the desert and xeric shrubland (43.5%) biomes. Our results highlight the fact that although the drought events within a growing season decreased significantly in the northern hemisphere from 1998 to 2015, the very existence of a mismatch between a reduction in drought areas and an increase in highly drought-vulnerable areas makes the impact of drought on vegetation nonnegligible. This work provides valuable information for designing coping measures to reduce the vegetative drought risk in the Northern Hemisphere.

Drought and extreme precipitation events can have major environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Yet, how drought and wetness are changing in China in the context of climate change is still under debate. Here, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was calculated based on high-quality and more densely distributed daily meteorological observation data from 655 stations across China during the period of 1965–2017. National and regional trends in drought and wetness and their various characteristics, including intensity, duration, frequency, and percentage of area affected, were investigated at multiple timescales. We found that (1) China as a whole has undergone a significant (p < 0.01, trend significant at the level of 0.01) wetting trend, with an annual SPEI increase of 0.5 per decade from 1965 to 2017. A seasonal wetting trend was also observed, with summer being particularly significant (p < 0.01). (2) Regionally, each subregion also showed a wetting trend during the study period except for southwest China, and these wetting trends were significant in the western region of northwest China (p < 0.05, trend significant at the level of 0.05), the Tibetan Plateau (p < 0.05), and eastern China (p = 0.06). (3) Decadal trends in drought and wetness intensity, frequency, duration, and affected areas indicated that the drought events also became more severe and more frequent in the last two decades, and the areas showing drying trends were mainly located in southwest China (especially for the autumn drought) and the southwestern parts of eastern northwest China (spring drought). Our results highlight the fact that although a wetting trend was observed in most regions of China, the frequent occurrence of severe drought in southwest China and the southwestern parts of eastern northwest China still present a considerable threat to both the environment and society. Therefore, how to effectively coordinate the allocation of regional water resources to cope with drought risk under future climate change will be particularly important.

The sector that suffers the most directly from drought is agriculture, and drought is expected to become more serious in the context of global warming. Effectively evaluating the agricultural drought risk is fundamental to establishing present water resource management and guaranteeing food security. Therefore, southeast Gansu province was selected for this study as a typical region for which to analyze drought trends and assess agricultural drought risk. Trends for the period from 1967 to 2018 were analyzed at 21 locations by using the Mann–Kendall method, and drought was quantified by using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Spatial characteristics of the agricultural drought risk that emphasized the combined role of hazards and vulnerability were investigated at a 1-km grid scale. Results showed that the annual SPEI exhibited a nonsignificant increasing trend from 1967 to 1990 but that after 1990, the SPEI showed a steep downward trend of 0.1 per decade. The drying trend from 1990 to 2018 was mainly attributed to a significant increase in the reference evapotranspiration. Approximately 16.1% of the agricultural areas are exposed to an extremely high risk and 42.2% are exposed to high risk of drought. Moreover, 56.7% of the extremely high-risk agricultural areas are located in the Longnan region, which strongly suggests that more attention must be paid to preparedness for and mitigation of drought in the Longnan region. This study offers a scientific approach to evaluating the risk of agricultural drought in dry agricultural regions.
