Source apportionment of potentially toxic elements in soils is a critical step for devising soil sustainable management strategies. However, misjudgment or imprecision can occur when traditional statistical methods are applied to identify and apportion the sources. The main objective of the study was to develop a robust approach composed of the absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR) receptor model, positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model and geostatistics to identify and apportion sources of soil potentially toxic elements in typical industrial and mining city, eastern China. APCS/MLR and PMF were applied to provide robust factors with contribution rates. The geostatistics coupled with the variography and kriging methods was used to present factors derived from these two receptor models. The results indicated that mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn exceeded the local background levels. Based on multivariate receptor models and geostatistics, we determined four sources of eight potentially toxic elements including natural source (parent material), agricultural practices, pollutant emissions (industrial, mining and traffic) and the atmospheric deposition of coal combustion, which accounted for 68%, 12%, 12% and 9% of the observed potentially toxic element concentrations, respectively. This study provides a reliable and robust approach for potentially toxic elements source apportionment in this particular industrial and mining city with a clear potential for future application in other regions.

The spatial distribution and accessibility of urban public service facilities affect socioeconomic factors in the lives of residents, especially housing prices. Given that most previous studies focus on the accessibility of a certain, single type of facility and its impact on housing prices, this research uses improved two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) methods by considering the differences in the service capacity of different types of public service facilities in real life to evaluate their accessibility to residential communities in Jinan city based on 3117 facilities covering 11 different kinds of facilitates. Then, we assess the spatial distribution of the impact of the accessibility of different public service facilities on housing prices in Jinan city through a local indicator of a spatial association (LISA) cluster diagram generated based on the bivariate local Moran’s index. Our objectives are to assess the accessibility of multiple public service facilities using an improved 2SFCA method and to explore the spatial correlations between the accessibility of public service facilities and housing prices. The results show that the housing prices in Jinan are clustered and that the areas with high housing prices are mainly concentrated in the Lixia District and the center of the downtown area. The accessibility of medical, shopping, educational and bus stop facilities in the Lixia District is better than that in other districts. The accessibility of shopping, medical and tourist attraction facilities has the most significant impact on housing prices, and the number of communities in which the accessibility of these public service facilities and housing prices form a positive correlation cluster accounts for 50.5%, 47.9% and 45.8% of all communities, respectively. On the other hand, educational accessibility and bus stop accessibility have nothing to do with housing prices, and the number of communities in which the accessibility of these public service facilities forms a not-significant cluster with housing prices accounting for 51.1% and 56.5% of the total, respectively. In this study, the combined 2SFCA method is used to improve the method for evaluating the accessibility of a variety of public service facilities, and its applicability is verified by practical application. By analyzing the spatial correlation between accessibility and housing prices, we expand our understanding of accessibility and show that it plays a central role in housing prices, which will help to improve the spatial pattern of urban public places in the future, provide support for decision makers and provide a reference for the government and real estate developers.

Visible and near-infrared reflectance (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy can provide low-cost and highdensity data for mapping various soil properties. However, a weak correlation between the spectra and measurements of soil heavy metals makes spectroscopy difficult to use in predicting incipient risk areas. In this study, we introduce a new spectral index (SI) based on Vis-NIR spectra and use it as a covariate in ordinary cokriging (OCK) to improve the mapping of soil heavy metals. The SI was defined from the highest covariance between spectra and heavy metal content in the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. The proposed mapping approach was compared with an ordinary kriging (OK) predictor that uses only soil heavy metal data and an OCK predictor that uses soil organic matter (SOM) and Fe as covariates. To this end, a total of 100 topsoil (0-20 cm) samples were collected in an agricultural area near Longkou City, and the contents of As, Pb and Zn in the soil were determined. The results showed that OCK with the SI provided better results in terms of unbiasedness and accuracy compared to other comparative methods. Additionally, we explored the SI through simple strategies based on spectral analysis and correlation statistics and found that the SI synthesized most of the soil properties affected by heavy metals and was not limited to Fe and SOM. In summary, the SI method is cost-effective for improving soil heavy metal mapping and can be applied to other areas.

Earthquake-induced landslides are one of the most dangerous secondary disasters in mountainous areas throughout the world. The nowcasting of coseismic landslides is crucial for planning land management, development, and urbanization in mountainous areas. Taking Wenchuan County in Western Sichuan Plateau (WPS) as the study area, a landslide inventory was built using historical records. Herein, eight causative factors were selected for a library of factors, and then a landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) was performed based on the machine learning techniques of Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models, respectively. The prediction abilities of the above two LSM models were assessed using the area under curve (AUC) value of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, precision, recall ratio, accuracy, and specificity. The performances of both machine learning techniques were found to be excellent, but RF outperformed in accuracy. There were still some differences between the models’ performances shown by the results: RF (AUC = 0.966) outperformed ANN (AUC = 0.914). The RF model demonstrated a higher degree of correlation between the areas classified as very low and high susceptibility in comparison to the ANN model. The results provided a theoretical framework upon which machine learning applications could be applied (e.g., RF and ANN), a reliable and low-cost tool to assess landslide susceptibility. This comparative study will provide a useful description of earthquake-induced landslides in the study area, which can be used to anticipate the features of landslides in the future, and have played a very important role in proper anthropogenic activities, resource management, and infrastructural development of the mountainous areas.

Understanding the characteristics of PM2.5 and its socioeconomic factors is crucial for managing air pollution. Research on the socioeconomic influences of PM2.5 has yielded several results. However, the spatial heterogeneity of the effect of various socioeconomic factors on PM2.5 at different scales has yet to be studied. This paper collated PM2.5 data for 359 cities in China from 2005 to 2020, as well as socioeconomic data: GDP per capita (GDPP), secondary industry proportion (SIP), number of industrial enterprise units above the scale (NOIE), general public budget revenue as a proportion of GDP (PBR), and population density (PD). The spatial autocorrelation and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model was used to analyze the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of PM2.5 and explore the impact of different scales of economic factors. Results show that the overall economic level was developing well, with a spatial distribution trend of high in the east and low in the west. With a large positive spatial correlation and a highly concentrated clustering pattern, the PM2.5 concentration declined in 2020. Secondly, the OLS model’s statistical results were skewed and unable to shed light on the association between economic factors and PM2.5. Predictions from the GWR and MGWR models may be more precise than those from the OLS model. The scales of the effect were produced by the MGWR model’s variable bandwidth and regression coefficient. In particular, the MGWR model’s regression coefficient and variable bandwidth allowed it to account for the scale influence of economic factors; it had the highest adjusted R2 values, smallest AICc values, and residual sums of squares. Lastly, the PBR had a clear negative impact on PM2.5, whereas the negative impact of GDPP was weak and positively correlated in some western regions, such as Gansu and Qinghai provinces. The SIP, NOIE, and PD were positively correlated with PM2.5 in most regions. Our findings can serve as a theoretical foundation for researching the associations between PM2.5 and socioeconomic variables, and for encouraging the coequal growth of the economy and the environment.
