Biography

Jiwei Li, PhD, is a biological oceanographer and remote sensing scientist. He received his PhD in Geosciences from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and is currently an Assistant Research Professor at the Arizona State University Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science. Dr. Li’s research stands at the forefront of exploring interactions between humans and natural systems, especially at the land–ocean interface. His research combines remote sensing with globally scalable physical analytical algorithms, big data analysis, cloud computing, and machine learning to understand the influences of human activities on the aquatic systems (oceans, rivers, and lakes) with the aim of protecting the Earth’s resources (coral reef, freshwater, and fish) and achieving a more sustainable future. He is currently focused on building the first global coral reef monitoring system to inform conservation and management of shallow coastal ecosystems.
